Autumn Grazing Crops. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 4 February 1914

Autumn Grazing Crops. Through the medium of " The Leader," a Wimmcra farmer writes. I wish to direct the atten tion of farmers in the northern districts of Victoria to a cheap and useful way of growing rape, sug gested by our own experience ::— We obtained a very satisfactory return from our rape crop grown in drills in the ordinary way, but we carried out another experiment, which; I think, suggests a system suited to the requirements of nor thern farmers. I refer to the sys tem of sowing rape broadcast on stubble land as a means of increas ing the supply of grazing fodder for stock and improving the con dition of the soil.' The season before last we harrowed in rape seed upon stubble land early in the autumn, and the result was highly satisfactory. The self-sown grain and the rape grew together, the former appearing to benefit the latter by sheltering it, and a .very large quantity of fodder was pro duced. 4 Thr crop Was cut in October for ensilage, but. I believe that after the m...

In the Cause of Charity. Tho whirligig of time has brought about the season sot apart by tho district brass bands for their annual Sunday collections in aid of the St. -Amaud Hospital. Tho local baud has already mndo ft movo ill this direction, in tho shape of fixing dates for the different places where visits are proposed to bo made. Tho ton places where collections have previously been made aro again set down 011 the list. Last year tho amount. handed over to charity was £184 18s 5d, out of a total sum of £222 14s 3d. l<Yom this amount £26 was deducted for drag-hire, and £12 13s lOd for incidental expenses, making a total of £37 15s lOd 011 the expenditaro side. This seems a large amount to bo deducted front the collections, as tho band givo their sorvices free, and we would suggest that this year somo means bo dovised for reducing tho sum placed at the disposal of the batid, it would greatly assist them in tho execution of a uoble work. Pro viding an arrangement ol thi...
