PENSIONS VERSUS PATRIOTISM. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Times — 24 January 1857

PENSIONS VfWSCS PATRIOTISM. ''VVe Jire not Mirpriswl nt the result of tho dclmto onMr.idoi'dou's n solutions relative to the pen oiuns. It. would lie too much lo expect anything iJikc patriotism or deference to public opinion from the- present Assembly. Toryism, which is extinct in England, is still rnnipant here, but a day of reckoning is at liniul. SYDNEY NEWS. [From our Special OonnnsroyDDHT.] Smco my last communication political -matters have engrossed a considcra^}#; share.of -public attention. Mr. Nichols brought' the subject before the House on a ncries of resolutions afitrsriing that the. pqroitfn had cowed to be an appanago of the Governor,; that tho previous Governors only held it on condition that they usod it as a place of residcnco; that it did not rest with hor Majesty to doclde whother his Excellency had oxceedcdhls powers or not ; and that the House adhered to the opiniono ex pressed in its former resolution. Tbe fourth and last sessi m of the Provincial Council of Wellington was opened on tho 30th ultimo, at 3 p.m., pursuant to the proclamation of his Honor the Superintendent; at their temporary Council Chamber. THE CATHOLIC LITERARY INSTITUTE. [Newspaper Article] — Northern Times — 24 January 1857

THE CATHOLIC LITERARY INSTITUTE. . This valuable literary institution han been in existeiKO about six. months, but we regret to state that the amount of patronage -accorded to it by the particular body for whose espcical benefit it was established has not by any means justified ihe expectation of its founders. This want of adequate support appears the more striking when it is taken into account that there are about 15,000 members of the Catholic communion in Sydney and its vicinity. The library conUius upwards of 700 volumes, com prising standard works in overy department, of litorature —historical, philosophical, and imaginative. Many of the works are to bo found only in the library of the student. Nor has the claims of tho current Ktcraturo of the day) been overlooked. Newspapers from the prin cipal cities in Great Britain and Ireland, a few from British America and the United States, and nearly tho whole of our (ocal, country, and colonial newspapers , fre to be found on the tabl...
