GRAIN, &C. Harrison, Jones, and Devlin, Limited. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Wool and Stock Journal — 13 January 1899

, GRAIN, &C. Harrison, Jones, and Devlin, Limited. In wheat the general situation remains un changed, The trado seems to have accommo dated itself to the fact of a big surplus within thecolonieB, and it is now taking time to study conditions abroad. The under-current of con fidence still prevails amongst growers in the colony, but both Melbourne and Adelaide are offering freely at a concession on last week's quotations, and consequently they are securing tne bulk of millers' orders. Chiokwheat has been well inquired for by contractors and others for mixing with outs, and all fur ward has met with ready sale. Very little change has occurred in the maize market, although fairly large quantities have come for ward. Consumers are now resorting to oats more freely, and the demand has improved considerably. Both bran and pollard have been in strong request, and prices have ad vanced. Wheat : Prime milling, 2s 8d to 2h Ski; chickwheat, from 2h fid to 2s 6d per bushel. Maize: Prime ...

New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Limited. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Wool and Stock Journal — 13 January 1899

New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Limited. During the past week the local wheat market has not ruled very active. 'Holders in the country, generally speaking, are disinclined at present to meet the market, while millers, on the other hand, though operating at up to 'is 9d for prime samples, show a disposition to further reduce their buying limits. Medium to good milling quality wheat is hard to work off, and may lie quoted nominally to about 2s i 7d,, while chickwheat is quoted from about 2s I to 2s 5d per bushel. The Adelaide market is reported steady at 2h fid, while in Melbourne quotations rule up to 2h GJd. Some consider able export buaiuesB in the southern marketB has recently been carried through, latest cable grams advising the sale of some 9,000 quarters Victorian wheat, January loading, at 28s 6d per quarter, e.i.f.-equivalent to about 2s 7d per bushel Melbourne. The flour market con-! tinues very quiet, best local and Victorian and Adelaide brands offering freely...

Goldsbrough, Mort, and Co., Limited. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Wool and Stock Journal — 13 January 1899

Goldsbrough, Mort, and Co., Tjimi' New South Wales wheat growers cci/timio hold on stubbornly to their stocks, but y/hilU ., doing HO they evidently lone sight of the fact that the Victorian growers are taking their market from them. An evidence of this we have only to think for a moment to arrive at the true meaning of the following figures Exports from Melbourne of breadstuff during the week : 7,011 bagB wheat per Elinhurst for London ; 9,000 bags per Augsburg for Ant werp ; 1,350 bags per Oiulf of Ancuu for "Hull ; 4,719 bags for N.N. Wales and Queensland : 3.710 lings flour fur N.S. Wales and Queensland. Thus it will be seen that growers here continue to hold their wheat, Victorian growers are quitting their stocks on this market, and they are also able to treat with the outside world. Only this week a buyer hero received instruc tions to forward 10,000 bags of wheat to Lon don, but instead of purchasing here ho wont to Victoria, where he was able to buy on very much better term...

John Bridge and Co. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Wool and Stock Journal — 13 January 1899

John Bridge and Co. (Jenerally speaking, buainess Hinco our laat report has been quiet, although there has been a steady oitqiiiry for one or two lines, notably prime feed oats and good quality Victorian chaff, and although the former can only be quoted at an advance of Jd per bushel, it is a matter of surprise that they have not gone j st ill higher, seeing that maize continues at a very high rate. The latter lino has been leas active during the past day or HO, no doubt owing to the near approach of the American shipment pur Falls of Keltie, but we do not anticipate that this will cause much alteration. Other linen are without change, excepting potatoes, which are easier. Wheat : The market still remains unsettled, although in j some cases our local millerB show a better ilia position to buy, but only on the basis of 2s 9d, which is practically equal to what it can bo landed here from the southern colonios. It is ; diflicult to say whother they will succeed in forcing prices down l...

Depopulation in France. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Wool and Stock Journal — 20 January 1899

Depopulation hi France, ? ? ?? *» The returns of the oonsua for Franco whioh was takou in March, 1807, have now beon pub lished and compared with tho statistics of the previous census, whioh was taken six years be fore. A year ago, the number of paople in Franco was 38,228,969, and at the 181)1 census it was 38,095,150, bo that in the six years tho population of Fran GO had only increased by 133,819 persona. And ovqn this trifling inoreaso id moro apparent than roal, for it has takon t plaoo entirely in tho largo towns, and iB duo to the influx of foreigners, mjoli as Belgians and Italians, who aro to bo found in increasing nnmbors among tho urban populations of France. To only 24 departments is there any inoreaso ; in .63 departments there is a positive falling oil', and this is more especially marked in the rural oommunoo. |

A. McArthur and Co. [Newspaper Article] — The Sydney Wool and Stock Journal — 20 January 1899

A. McArfchur and Wheat: Not much business in milling wheat ha9 transpired locally this week. Offerings of prime quality are rather Hparao, and as millers, taken all round, do not hold very con siderable stocks, they are anxious to makepur chases of any prime grain ottering locally, pro vided always they can get it at what they con sider a fair figure. 1 heir price is, of course, practically fixed by the price at which Hour is ottering from the" other colon ion, and with which they have to compete. These pricos, however, are somewhat below the idea of our local growers, who look for a much more favourable market later on, and think that, in the event of any chango occurring, it can scarcely be for the worse. Under these cir cumstances it is not .surprising that a fair amount of Victorian grain is finding its way into our city mills, as the price at which this can bo brought from Victoria is a trifle lower than what may bo regarded as nominal values here for prime milling grain. We qu...
