FOOD FOB THE PEOPLE. THE ridicule which some of tbe English agricultural journals poured out some months ago, upon the attempt of the Australian colonies to feed the British population with preserved meat, was ill timed, to say the least of it. It was intended doubtless to actas a discourage- ment to the graziers on this side from interfering with the market on that, and was employed more in the interests of their farming subscribers than in those of the many-headed working-classes. It was with a species of exultation that a drop in tho price of tinned meats was commented upon at the close of the Franco-Prussian war, as though a final blow was given to a trade that could not exist in times of peace. Forthwith the British people were to be fed from legitimate sources, and the colonial mutton and beef might find an outlet in other directions, or cease to bo developed. SKIPPING INTELLIGENCE. 1 JAN tr ABT 2*.-William and Hoary, ketch, E. Johnson, naitar, (rom Masthead Island. Cargo : Turtles tor O.QJL?.Oo. Mr. Ebenerer Johnjon, of tho William and Henry, ketch, reporta a successful trip to Mast head.lsland for turtle. He left Gladstone on Sunday last, with bis eon, and proceeded to tbs island, where h* succeeded iu catching 18 turtles weighing 8 or 4 cwt. each. Leaving the island on Wednesday, at 8 a.m., he reached Gladstone at 4 p.m. ; tailed again at 6 p.m., and arrived at Lakes Creek at ll a.m. on Thursday, and delivered his load in good order. The Tinonee, s.s., reached Bowen from Mackay yesterday. The James Paterson, SJ., bound for Sydney from this port, wai in sight at Woody leland yesterday. The Lady Bowen, e., left Brisbane for Mary- borough,. Gladstone, and Rockhampton, at noon 5Ss>%gntoat, s.s., arrived at Sydney for Rockhampton on Wednesday.

ROCKHAMPTON POLICE COURT. Wednesday, January 24. BEPOBB Mr. Wm. Townley, P.M. ÜN80ÜTTD MOTO. William Wildon, a Dane, was brought before the Court for protection. Patrick O'Sullivan aaw prisoner on Tuesday evening in a house in a Quay-street ; fae was fay himself, and appeared to be ill; he was given into witness' charge by Christiansen for protection. Ferdinand Christiansen, carpenter, living in Quay lane, stated.that be gave prisoner in charge because prisoner waa living in a house by himself) witness was attending him and giving bim food, but for the last two days the man would not eat ; during night time he was einging and laughing and talking nonsense, and was not able so toke care of himself. Dr. Salmond stated that be had examined the defendant that morning, and found bim in very bad health, Buffering from dropsy, and a Gt subject for tho hospital. Tbe Bench discharged the prisoner.
