SMOKE DISTURBS PLEASURE OF NEW YORK SHOWGOERS Audience Files Out of Proctor s 125 th Street and Churchill Diners Flee . Two fires , within a half hour of each other , but in widely different portions of the city , interfered with the pleasure of New York theatergoers Monday evening . Rubbish in a drug-store cellar , which extends under Proctor s 125 th Street theater was ignited as the result of defective insulation of electric wiring and smoke penetrating the theater where a performance was in progress caused some uneasiness . In perfect order and . without anything which approached a panic 1 , 800 people filed out of the theater as the result of a reassuring speech which the house firemen interrupted an act s performance to make .
