AMERICAN TALES . [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 8 December 1831

AMERICAN TALES . [ From tl ! I h « os Monthly Magasiiu . ] From a-small volume under the above title , published at Philadelphia , we make the following extracts . They are descriptive of scenes which occur only in a state of war . and which are happily unfrequent in our country • in lakes , presented an agreeable , but eccentric diversity , of scenic beauty , combining the wildest traits of nature , with the cheerful indications of enlightened civility and rural comfort . The desert smiled , but smiled in its native beauty . The foot of science had not yet wandered thither ; nor had the ample coffers of a state been opened , to diffuse with unexampled munificence , over a widely spread domain , the of industry and commerce . The beautiful villages scattered throughout this ex- ,. exhibited a neatness , taste and order , which wo ild have been honorable to r communities . Between these little is lay extensive tracts of wilderness , still i ted by the deer , and enlivened by the h...

THE DEAD SEA , OR SEA OF SODOM . [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 8 December 1831

THE DEAD SEA , OR SEA OF SODOM . [ From the New Monthly Mmra .-inc . ~ l At last we reached the brink of tlie precipices which uang over the Dead Sea . The dawn was now appearing ; and tie grey , and cold light , the lake was seen for beneath , stretching out to an interminable length , while the high mountains of Arabia Petrasa opposite were shrouded in darknes . The descent of the heights was long and difficult ; and ere we reached the bottom , the ruddy glow of morning was on the precipices over our heads . The line of shore at the bottom was about two hundred yards wide , and we hastened to the edge of the lake ; but for several from it the foot sunk in a blade mud . and its surface was every where covered with a greyish scurf , which we were obliged to remove before tasting it . There wasnola breath of wind , and the waters lay like lead on the shore . Whoever has seen the Dead Sea , will ever have its aspect impressed on his memory ; it is ki ( ruth a gloomy and fearful specta...

THE YANKEE PEDLAR . [Newspaper Article] — Sangamo Journal / Illinois State Journal — 8 December 1831

THE YANKEE PEDLAR . [ From the Sandy Hill N . Y . Temperance . 4 rfr . ] Joshua Peabody was one of the five sons of a Connecticut farmer , who had just enough land to support one family , and no more ; so that all the sons but the eldest early discovered the necessity of resorting to some business , in which they could support themselves by their own exertions . Long before Joshua was of age , he had determined to pursue the honorable employment of pedling . In the fall of the year in which Joshua was 19 , he obtained his father s consent to Iry his skill in the employment he had chosen , and was soon equipped in the first style—not with a crazy cart and a half starved horse , as was the custom fifty years ago ; but with a substantial , well made and well-fed horse , and covered wagon with all the colors of the rainbow—ornamented with curtains , and trimmed with many a yard of red cotton fringe . His load requires a minute description , as it is often tho t very wonderful , that...
