Baron Duke 50 th DEAD [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1910
Baron Duke 50 th DEAD The Berkshire breed suffers a greater loss in the death of Baron Duke 50 th than his late owner and it is patent that Baron Duke 50 th will go down in Berkshire history among the very greatest boars of the breed . Daughters of Baron iDuke 50 th , bred to Masterpiece will be included in the Gregory Farm Sale to be-held at White Hall , III ., on Feb . 24 th and doubtless this will be the last opportunity that Berkshire breeders will ever have to purchase daughters of this great boar bred to Masterpiece . THE EDITOR . . We regret to learn of the recent death of Baron Duke 50 th 75000 at Gregory Farm , White Hall , III . Baron Duke 50 th has long been considered the best son of Lord Premier . He was a litter mate of Duchess 279 th , the Grand Champion Sow at the St , Louis Worlds Fair , and it has been universally conceded that if Baron Duke 50 th had not met with an accident prior to the St . Louis World s Fair that he would have been Grand Champion Berkshire Boar...
Threshing Wheat in the "Sikeston District . " [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1910
Threshing Wheat in the Sikeston District . This is a scene in a wheat field in the Sikeston District at threshing time . On the farm shown here the gentleman threshed 29 bushels to the acre on an average on four hundred acres and after getting the wheat off the land he sowed it back to peas , which made as much , money as the wheat . After harvesting the pea crop he sowed his land back to wheat for the following year and had a good wheat pasture all winter . This is not an exception , hut is what is done every year . The reason people in the Sikeston District can do this is because the seasons are longer by three to four weeks than they are 160 miles north . The soil 1 is of a rich sandy loam and will produce from 60 to 100 bushels of cern . The C . F . Bruton Real Estate and Investment Co ., of Sikeston , Mo ., have thousands of acres like this for sale at a reasonable price and on good terms . It will pay you to write them for literature , mentioning the Berkshire World , and they...
Smith's Standard Breeding Crate [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1910
Smiths Standard Breeding Crate Again , we want to call the attention of Berkshire Breeders to Smiths Standard Breeding crate , that is being advertised through the columns of The Berkshire World . This crate without aoubt , is among the best . The one essential thing in a breeding crate is to so hold the sow in an easy position so there is absolutely no strain on her . She can be served by the very largest boars and not be tired and worn out . Here are a few points to keep in mind . With market hogs around ? 9 . 00 what would a crate be worth to a breeder who Is breeding twenty sows ? With a good crate , he can easily get an average of two pigs to the sow more than bred in the ordinary way and get a stronger and better litter of pigs in every way . But suppose that he only gets one more pig to the sow , that will 1 make him twenty pigs , and when they come to breeding age at the low price- of $ 20 . 00 per head , he will have $ 400 . 00 on the right side of the ledger . That is not ...

Gregory Farm Sale , White Hall , 111 ., Feb . 24 th . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1910
Gregory Farm Sale , White Hall , 111 ., Feb . 24 th . We have kept in close touch with the Gregory Farm Berkshire herd from Its earliest infancy . Both of their great herd boars , Masterpiece and Baron Duke 50 th were known and admired by us before they found their home at Gregory Farm . We have known Masterpiece from a pig and it has been with more than usual interest we have watched the phenomenal increase of the demand for his pigs . This interest is incidentally due to the fact that Masterpiece was the sire of the first Berkshire pig we ever exhibited , and as this pig proved a State Fair winner and one of the first of a long procession of Masterpiece State Fair winners , we have taken an interest in the Masterpiece family ever since . Regarding Baron Duke 50 th , we take pleasure in saying that as a sire he has few equals . The mingling of Masterpiece and Baron Duke 50 th blood has done much to produce the high type of Berkshires found on Gregory Farm . Rival s Last , one of th...
Report of Illinois State Berkshire Sale , Held Jan . 26 th . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1910
Report of Illinois State Berkshire Sale , Held Jan . 26 th . The public sale held by the Illinois State Berkshire Association at Urbana on January 26 th , during the college short course , was in many respects very successful . The sale was held in the Judging pavilion in the College of Agriculture and attended by a large number of students and breeders who were taking the short course . However , the old breeders were noticeable by their absence , and if it had not been for the bidding of The Farmer Farm , Farmington , Minn ., and some new breeders , the sale would not have been a success . There wer several of the Illinois breeders present , but with few exceptions did not place a single bid on the animals offered for sale . The one advantage gained from this fact was that several new breeders got started , who otherwise might not have been able to purchase the animals at their price . Considering the quality of the stuff consigned , prices were very good . Most of the animals wer...
