THE CHIEFTAIN. THE ALIEN LAND ACT. Delegate Cstron's alien act hav ing passed both houses of con Kress, a brief review of the ame becomes opportune, upon the as sumption that many of our fellow citizens have not had opportunity of becoming acquainted with its provisions which would seem to be of prime interest to every resi dent of New Mexico. Upon the fii st reading this measure encoun tered considerable opposition, but that grim determination which lias won upon so many occasions for Mr. Catron, came into play in this instance, and the measure finally passed both houses, for which New Mexico's representa tive at Washington deserves much credit. The titte of the act, declares its purpose to better define and regu late the rights of aliens to hold and own real estate in the terri tories, and it provides that no alien or person who is not a citi zen of the United States, or who has nut declared his intention to become a citizen of the United States in the manner provided by law, shal...

One year 12.50 ti uiontbt 1.85 The territorial legislature will Rejourn next Thursday. The prospects in New Mexico are brighter than one year ago. It looks as if the lead mining in dustry will certainly pick up dur ing the present year. It is said that Governor Thorn ton came back from Washington feeling pretty tolerably blue. When properly developed New Mexico has more resources than any ether state or territory in the union. During Mr. Cleveland's term just closed the total deficit in the treasury amounted to a little over $200,000,000. the united states senate is now in -special session and the lower house of congress is called to convene March 15th. Grumblers to the contrary, New Mexico has a bright future before her. It may not come right away, but it will come.
