(lONE TO MEET THE AN GELS. Cincinnati Baturday Night. We hate to have a lawyer die. Not that we think any more of lawyers than we do of any other class of people, but we know there has to be a ~meeting of. the bar,' and resolutions are going to be drawn up, (they ought to be drawn up clear out of sight and left there) and speeches made eulogising the deceased, principally by rival attor neys who hated him like sin when he was alive, and who were never known to say any good of him un* til he was laid away under the sod. Then these resolutions and sreeches must be printed in all the daily papers, and the community discov. ere, when too late what a jewell they had among them. NEW ZEALA PROVERBS. I. SERIST4A Y - $SUERMAN'S SHIRKING. . Secretary Sherman's letter to Mr. Potter, chairman ef the Comn nittee of Investigation, offering to 3roduco evidence of Democratic intimidation and violence in the parishes of East and West Felici ana in the last Presidential elec tion, was only made public on the 29tb of Junq last. The secretary .refused to give it to the press in advance of the committee's action upon it. The refusal of the cosn mittee to accept his offer has ie moved his objection to i:s publica tion. The committee has been at. tempting to show that M r. Sherman induced certain election officers to protest fraudulently against the counting of the vote in the parishes mentioned. He anpears to think that this accusation would be suffi ciently refuted by positive proof of intimidation and violence in those parishes. Accor4ingly lie furnishes a list of witnesses by whom he claims that he caf'establish an or ganized effort to intimidate repub licans with a view to control" the elect...

THE' JUDICIAY AMEND The fotlowing er-t act we take from a v.ryv atle artic e in the Opelonsas Courier; If amtetdmntttnt XI is adopted, the judiciary systemr of the State will be precipitated in to inextricable confusion. The jadiciary of the State is an independent and co .cqual branch of the governtment, and like the legislative and exe u tive departments,. should. be or dained and established by the con atitution. i speciAly is th s true of all con:rts 9bove the grade of j Istico of the peace. District courts and appellate courts should rest upon a stable and independent basis. The reason ot ths is ob vious. Judges should be free ft omi control by the legislative branch, which in our recent his'ory, has not hesitated to abolish courts in order to be rid of jtrdges political- fir ly obnoxious to the majority of that body. If courts Meo to depend for oW existence upon the captrice of the legislator, we need not expect, to see the law firmly and courageous ly executed. To subject ...
