Cltina and. 'ipan at the Unl "vcrnal EkpohHIob of 107. Any observant person who visited the narrow gallery of the Paris Exposition of 18C7, where China and Japan were placed side by side, conld not have failed noticing the scanty variety of objects laid ont in the Chinese Department, as com pared with the Japanese, and wondering how the products of a territory, occupying one third of the Continent of Asia and having a popnlation of above 300,000,000 inhabitants according to official statistics, could be comprised within snch narrow limits as those in which they were exposed for public inspection. The fact is that the Cbimese Government did not send any thing to the Paris Exhibition, and has not taken the slightest troublo to divulge to the world the civilization or indnstry of its subjects. "What U the cause, of this indif ference? It is proper, in the first place, to remark that certain countries, included by geographers within the frontiers of China, such as Thibet, Corea, and som...

t vf' connencuii, HONOLULU, APRIL G, 1SC9. The only foreign arrival we have to note if the whaling bark Eagle, from tbe Coast of California, with 00 bbls. of Coast oil, and tlie tchr. Eugenic, from Tahiti. Unless a few of tbe borne whalers tench, on their way North, we may consider the "spring season" about over. In former years, when the bulk of the fleet cruised between seasons, chiefly on tbe Coast of California, they gen erally made this Tiort in the spring, to ship oil and refit. IVe could then look forward to quite a trade for a month or six weeks. This has been changed, in a measure, by a cumber go ing West, and into Japan in the spring, while others are cither fitted out for the year, or return merely to get a few potatoes, or pro visions, sent from home ; so we can not ray much for the spring's business, now-a-days, as derived from whaleships. Tbe Wainlua Falls Estate, Kauai, was offered at Auction on the 27th ult.,by C. S. Bartow, and bid in for tbe sum of $5,500. e are ha...
