Highest of all in Leavening Power.— Latest U. S. Gov't Report ABSOLUTELY pure BECAME A THIEF WHILE INQANfc. Surprising Disclosures Follow the Return of a Convict's Reason. Three yoars of imprisonment have lifted theclod from tho mind of a man supposed to be a common horse thief, liut who is now revealed as Dr. Herbert Spencer, formerly a prosperous London physician. As a climax to his strange adventure the board of pardons will be at once petitioned for hia release from the eastern penitentiary in Philadelphia. On Sept. 2.1, Ib9l, three horses were Itolcn from the stable of G. W. Young man in this city. The thief was easily tracked and was captured at Mount Pleasant, Pa. In effecting his capture an officer was shot in the hip and an other was wounded in the arm. The horse thief had a gunshot wound in the Bide, and one arm was nearly torn from the eocket. He was brought back to Williauisport and locked in the county jail. While in prison he made half a dozen attempts to end his life....

Ashland, Or., July I.—The lone highwayman, who has been indus triously lying his vocation on the gtagu route from Ager, Cal., to Klawath Falls, just over the Oregon line in a scries of robberies, now has five holdups to his credit executed dur ing the past three months, having made a double play last night, robbing both tin- wist and west-bound stages. The east-bound stage left Ager in the afternoon'at the usual time, and when the drivers were changed at Klainath hot springs it was 9:20 o'clock, and a shower of rain had fallen. One passenger was aboard, H. V. Gates, a member of the Oregon leg islature from Washington county, and bound for Klamath Falls on business.
