STRESS«INNER PEACE AND HEALING [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 December 1985

STRESS«INNER PEACE AND HEALING Most medical doctors would recommend to you for almost all illnesses from the flu to heart attack rest and silence. Our bodies are a factory of tremendous energy and self-healing forces. Yet our Western culture seems to make such inner silence and peace almost impossible as our lives are being lived every day under more tension and stress. Such a culture depreciates time taken out from competing for more money, power and self-esteem. And so pressures build up;more aspirins, antacids, tranquillizers and pep pills are being consumed by us. We are not a healthy people and the root cause is the stress under which most of us live and the added fact that we do not experience inner silence and healing of our bodily and psychological tensions and anxieties by touching our indwelling, loving God,as the Ground of our being. Americans spend annually $l2O million on laxatives alone. In a year they consume 5?000 tons of aspirin. Tons of sleeping pills,tranquilizers,re...

STRESS RESPONSE [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 December 1985

STRESS RESPONSE ‘Dr.Hans Selye more than three decades ago discovered the stress response. This begins when the central nervous system registers a demand on your physical-emotion-spiritual resources. It might be an argument with a loved one or a disobedient child, loud noises around you. The first stage is the alarm stage. This triggers off within our autonomic nervous system a "fight or flight" syndrome. This is seen as a surge of energy produced by the release of adrenaline from our adrenal glands. Our energies are mobilized in order to attack or flee from the impending "enemy" that is seen as a threat to our safety. Your heart beats faster, your breathing accelerates. Y o ur muscles become tensed and ready for action. Ouch first stage of stress response is not bad in itself. It often has saved our lives or the lives of others. It fuels your excitement for pleasures and increases your anger in frustrating situations. When the demanding situation passes,we normally are "exhausted" ...

JESUS THE DIVINE PHYSICIAN [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 December 1985

JESUS THE DIVINE PHYSICIAN Is there any hope or way by which we can offset the ravages of stress in our lives? We Christians believe in God's infinite love for each of His children, especially in the healing power given to His Son,Jesus Christ, We believe that Jesus went about healing all the sick persons brought to Himprovided they believed in Him. Jesus was in touch with God's uncreated energies in a way that no other human being ever has been. If God created man's psyche in such a way that the unconscious, receiving a suggestion from an outside authority, can unleash great energies effecting healings and miraculous actions normally not performed by man on a conscious level,is it less of God's power in Jesus if He works according to our God-given nature?

USE OF TECHNIQUES [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 December 1985

USE OF TECHNIQUES Jesus used matter. He made a paste of spittle and clay and laid it on the blind man's eyes and told him to bathe his eyes in the Pool of Siloam (Jn 9:6-7)* He put spittle on the eyes of the blind man at Bethsaida and laid His hands on him and after two attempts He healed him (Mk 8:22-26).The woman with a hemorrhage touched Him and He felt a current of energy pass from Him to her. His Disciples were instructed by Him to anoint with oil . and healings were effected (Mk 6:13)* Jesus often gazed intently upon a sick person in need of healing as did Peter and John in healing the cripple at the Gate Beautiful (Ac 3 : k)* Jesus often gave the suggestion, asking whether the sick wanted to be healed and whether' they believed firmly that they would be healed. In such techniques Jesus allowed the sick the opportunity to become attentive to God's presence in Him. Jesus was the concrete expression of God's love for His sick children. By His gaze, touch,His whole gentle presence,...

TECHNIQUES IN PRAYER [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 December 1985

TECHNIQUES IN PRAYER If the indwelling Trinity dwells within us,how can we tap into that healing power of God's love? We should not fear using techniques of centering ourselves in God's presence in order that s we might submit our tensioned fears to the perfect love of God. We have always maintained a healthy use of material techniques in prayer such as bodily gestures in the Divine Liturgy, the use of bread and affine, oil, holy water in the sacraments. Should we,therefore, fear techniques for becoming quieted, techniques that we can find employed by all human beings, regardless of country and religion? Man universally the world over has learned to calm his psychic inner world by a rhythmic breathing. The body, soul and spirit merge into a relaxed "whole" person as God's breath is followed inwardly and outwardly, back and forth. One can concentrate on a burning candle and be powerfully aware of Jesus Christ as the light of the world. Or one gazes lovingly at the tabernacle that contains t...

THE JESUS PRAYER [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 December 1985

THE JESUS PRAYER We Catholics have had a long tradition, both in the East and the West,of breathing in the name of Jesus in order to experience His healing power as an indwelling, risen Lord. The early Christians, as we read in Acts, knew by faith and experience that there was no other name whereby they would be healed and saved (Ac V. 12). Gradually a Christian mantra was developed in the Christian East which monks of the desert recited day and night:"Lord,Jesus Christ,Son of God,have mercy on me, a sinneri" Thus a true transcendental meditation developed from the earliest centuries of Christianity. It was not "imported" from Hinduism. The unerring instincts of the Christian athletes of the desert, led by the Spirit, developed the Jesus Prayer. It was more than a technique. It was a summary of the whole Gospel that God so loved this world (Jn 3 : l6) as to give us His only begotten Son who died for love of us but rose from the dead in order to dwell within us. Through His released Spiri...

MEETING THE LORD IN DARKNESS [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 December 1985

MEETING THE LORD IN DARKNESS Do you seek an answer to your stress and anxieties that hold you enslaved to dark powers and cripple your health in body, soul and spirit? The answer is Jesus Christ, the Way,the Truth and the Life (Jn lZf: 6). But the secret is to open yourself up deeply, both in quieted consciousness and in the deepest recesses of your dark unconsious to His living and healing presence. This means that you can and should use techniques to quiet yourself on all levels of your being. I would like to share with you how I learned to cope with stresses in my own life. Ask yourself whether God is calling you into deeper prayer and more intense silence through a similar method of encountering the healing Lord. Studying the Fathers of the desert, I saw how they broke their sleep to rise in a night vigil to worship God. There was always the element of waiting for the Parousia, the full coming of Christ, both in their own lives and in the entire world. For over 25 years I have foun...

HEALING LOVE [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 December 1985

HEALING LOVE For those who have accustomed themselves habitually to such nightly visits with the Divine Physician, there is experienced a deep level of healing of hurts lodged so deeply within the unconscious that can only be known and experienced by the new strength and loving power of creativity they feel during the day. Concentration on the task at hand becomes much easier since the source of so much distraction and diffusion,of fears and anxieties, is dispelled by the enlivened consciousness of being grounded in God’s light. ’’You are all sons of light and sons of the day" (1 Th 5*5" You might just like to experiment. Tell the Lord I sent you!

Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 January 1986

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: May the peace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father and the communion of the Holy Spirit be always with you during this new year of 19861 As we enter into the month of January,we try to get used to the reality that we are already entering into anew year. Did you ever look ahead as a child in grade school and wonder what your life would be like down the road in 1985? And now you have lived through that time and anew year of life is being given to you by God as a gift. Surely the passing of one year can bring to our hearts some regrets. Perhaps we encountered our fair share of suffering for one year on the physical, psychic and spiritual levels. Some relationships brought special pain to us. Perhaps we caused pain to our loved ones, deliberately or indeliberately. Still all of us might have hearts that swell up with humble gratitude to God for His many graces and gifts. We thank God for His protective and involved energies of love susta...

GOD SPEAKS TO US IN DREAMS [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 January 1986

GOD SPEAKS TO US IN DREAMS God is love. And love is communicated in words and actions. Therefore,God is a God who is energetically always gifting us with the gift of Himself unto communion. He has created us according to His own image and likeness (Gn 1:26) in order that we might through the powers of our "soul 11 faculties of emotions, memory, imagination, intellect and will receive His "speech" about Himself, about our true selves in relation to Him,about ourselves in relation to other human beings and the whole created cosmos around us. Receiving God’s Word admits of many levels on our part. To enter deeply into communication with God and to listen with childis like obedience to His Word revealed to us,never a static act,but a continued process of greater and greater alertness, discernment and surrendering love on our part. It means hard work. It is of the essence of what we call the "spiritual life." There are no easy ways as the lives of the Saints show us. The Holy Spirit is God’...

DREAMS: THE FORGOTTEN LANGUAGE OF GOD [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 January 1986

DREAMS: THE FORGOTTEN LANGUAGE OF GOD But God so loves us that He also communicates Himself to us in more direct and immediate ways. Such modes of revelation are in the area that lies beyond the logical reasoning and sense experiences we acquire from outside of ourselves. One such "pre-logical" and yet very traditional manner in which God continually reveals Himself ,as we find in the consistent tradition of the Old and New Testaments and in the early Church until the sth century,is the world of dreams and "waking dreams" or visions. The prophet Joel prophesied: In the days to come-it is the Lord who speaksI will pour out my spirit on all mankind. Their sons and daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams (Ac 2:17;J1 3:1-5)* Such a biblical and early Christian heritage assures us that God not only communicates to us indirectly but also in manners more directly through our human spiritual powers. There never was doubt in the Old and New...

DREAMS AND VISIONS IN SCRIPTURE [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 January 1986

DREAMS AND VISIONS IN SCRIPTURE Dreams and visions have equal authority as God’s ’’place" where He communicates Himself in the Old and New Testament. Those skilled in their interpretation, such as Daniel and Joseph, were revered;those who understood the revelations of God to them, e.g.Abraham and Solomon, became great and wise. Those who were overcome by their inner experiences, such as St. Paul or Ezekiel, became great missionaries and prophets. Viewed from this perspective the entire Bible is the story of God’s in-breaking into man's conscious mind through the unconscious. Psychologically we call a dream an experience we might have during sleep when we are unconscious. A drearh is like an internal movie, a story that is being shown on the screen of our unconscious (even in technicolor!). This unfolds as a story in which we are involved as much as we are while watching a movie. But such a dream involves us because it is God communicating Himself directly through images from our unconsio...

PATRISTIC PERIOD [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 January 1986

PATRISTIC PERIOD This same belief that God speaks to individuals in dreams and visions continues in the first five centuries in the general practice of the faithful and in the nuanced teaching of such Fathers as Tertullian,Origen,St.Augustine,St.Basil,St. Gregory Nazianzus and a host of others. St. Basil and Evagrius,of the Egyptian desert of the 4th century, used dreams in spiritual direction to attain the hidden levels of the psyche, the unconscious, for healing the roots of human brokenness and and for the release of powers and abilities to serve others in freedom and love. Such a universal belief and practice of encountering God’s communication in dreams and visions fell into oblivion until only the 20th century through the great discoveries of the "layers" of the human psyche by modern psychologists. This restoration of dreams and visions as great helps in the spiritual life has come about also through a move away from "dry" Aristotelian scholastic theology toward a more prayerfu...

CAN YOUR DREAMS HEAL YOU? [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 January 1986

CAN YOUR DREAMS HEAL YOU? You might be asking yourself: "I know I dream, but I hardly ever remember my dreams. Then what am to make out of them when I do recall vaguely parts of them. I don't know how to interpret dreams.” First of all,let me assure you that you do dream and every night. We spend one-third of each day-night in sleeping and in dreaming. If we sleep seven hours, one hour cumulatively will ordinarily be spent in dreaming. From my own experience in dialoguing with my dreams, I would insist that we need to remain always in the world of.mystery. God does reveal Himself beyond mere sense knowledge in pre-logical,direct experiences that come out of our unconscious, that "gold mine" of rich potentiality waiting for release and actuation if we could tap its richness in terms of self-knowledge and God's personal communication with us. The second principle is that your dreams are always about yourself, at least about you in relationships with others. You are not a passive spectat...

THE MAP OF THE HUMAN PSYCHE [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 January 1986

THE MAP OF THE HUMAN PSYCHE According to Dr. Carl G.Jung, our human psyche is made up of consciousness and the unconscious. Take his example: imagine an iceberg with 4? to 5 % of its entirety floating above the ocean surface. That is your consciousness. In your consciousness resides your "persona” or masked self that is an adaptively organized image of yourself—your way of meeting and coping with the world around you. Over 95% that lies beneath watery surface Jung calls your unconscious. The unconscious is present and active before consciousness develops out of the dark potentiality locked in the unconscious. The consciousness develops between the ages of 6 and 10 years old. But to increase consciousness out of the unconscious potential requires attentive effort on your ■no rt Your unconscious is made up of your personal experiences that have been stored there and forgotten by you, plus the "collective” unconscious. This, according to Jung,"is the source of the instinctual forces of th...

A DREAMWORK METHODOLOGY [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 January 1986

A DREAMWORK METHODOLOGY To use your dreams properly in order to open up deeper levels of your unconscious to healing and integration between the ego and the self.between the anima (feminine) and the animus (masculine),between the rational and the pre-logical or intuitive,we need a methodology, a way of going about studying our dreams. New ways that do not overly stress the interpretative approach, but deal primarily with the dream and all it can tell us are being developed through a Gestalt process and Jung’s method of activating the imagination. The most helpful work I know of to develop such a methodology for working with your dreams is: The Jungian-Senoi Dreamwork Manual by Strephon Kaplan Williams (Berkeley,Ca. * Journey Press,l9Bs). In the limited space left, let me gather together some questions you can ask yourself about how to work with your dreams in a deeper and more enriching way. l.The first question is: Do you really wish to remember your dreams and work with them? To hel...
