SACRAMENTO CORRESPONDENCE. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 24 March 1855

SACRAMENTO CORRESPONDENCE. Cos SATURDAY, MARCH M, 1855. We take pleasure in laying before our readers tho following letter from Hon. W. W. Jones, and also the accompanying certificates of T. G. Battaile, Esq., Journal Clerk. As there is a wide discrepancy between the published statement of the vote as it appeared in the Sacramento papers, on its final passage aud the certificate of Mr. Battaile, we are anxious for further information, ia order that we may do justice to all parties. In our remarks we spoke more in sorrow than in anger, of the position our representative assumed, and a3 we were mistaken in the record we made of the vote, we take pleasure, in recording the names of Mr. Melius and Mr. Jones in the negative aud in support of Gov. Bigler's veto. — Assembly, Sacramento, March 14, 1855. Mr. Editor of the Los Angela Star: In your paper dated March Bth, in noticing the Bill (lately become a law,) called the " Thousand Dollar Bill,' you give a statement of the vote upon the Bi...

Los Angeles Fruit. "We received by the America, n Wo received by the America, on Sunday, a 1 Sackage of oranges from the vineyard of Benjamin '. Wilson, Esq., at Los Angeles, and a finer sample of that delicious fruit never passed our 4ips. The 1 vineyards of Los Angeles are famous for their pro- ] (tactions,- —the grape, pear, peach, apricot, apple, i fig—and supply the more northern sections of the State with the three first named varieties. In the ' fruit season, the steamers come up loaded with ' grapes, peaches and pears, which arc shipped from < here to Sacramento, Stockton, and all the mining towns. The orange has not been very extensively : cultivated. There are a few orange gardens in the town, and a very flourishing one at the Mission of . San Gabriel. Its cultivation can bo made as prof- 1 itable as any other production of the orchard, and 1 we doubt not that two or three years hence Los i Angeles oranges will be found upon every fruit ; stand in the State. U.S. Pacific Hallway Expedition.. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 24 March 1855

U.S. Pacific Hallway Expedition.. The U. S. Expedition of Topographical Engineers, which has for its object the Survey for a Pacifif Railroad, commanded by Lt. Jno. G. Parke, U.S.A., has, at length, arrived in our neighborhood. We had been apprised, from time to time, of the whereabouts of the Expedition, but it was not until yesterday we had the pleasure of seeing some of the officers connected with it; the whole Company arrived in good health, having undergone the active duties of their occupation with enjoyment. Happily for them the rainy season has been unusually mild, and except when in Mountain Districts the weather offered little impediment to the Survey. They have, thus far, almost completed tho first division of their labors, embracing from San Francisco to this place. We are informed that a most intimate survey and reconnoisance of our State between these two points has been accomplished, and from the Western border of Tulare plain to the ocean. Their examination led them i...

<> ARRIVAL OF THE AMERICA. FIFTEEN DAYS LATER FROM THE ATLANTIC STATES. ¶ Pacific R. R. Bill passed the Senate! Douglass' Pacific Railroad Bill, which provides for three routes across the continent, viz : Northern, Central and Southern, has passed the Senate, and will, it is believed, pass the House of Representatives. ¶ The House passed a bill to improve the discipline and efficiency of the navy. ¶ The bill provides for a board of naval officers to pass upon and report the qualifications of officers, with a view of weeding out the incapables and valetudinarians, and placing them upon a retired list, and also providing for the promotion of the efficient and deserving in the service. ¶ The joint resolution of the Senate to authorize the President to confer upon General Scott the rank of Lieut. General, has passed both Houses and been approved by the President. It gives the General about $40,000 back pay, and raises his regular pay to about $10,000 per annum. ¶ T...

According to the accounts brought by the mack Warrior at New Orleans, the most vigorous preparations have been made by CaptainGeneral Concha to resist invasion. The ports have been blockaded—all able bodied citizens are ordered to come forward for enrollment in the militiamore troops have been sent for—British men-of-war are assisting the Captain-General in his efforts to preserve order, and there is a terrible excitement all around. The A'. Y. Herald says : The startling intelligence which we publish from Havana, is strengthened by the remarkable disclosures which we this day publish from Washington. Read the special despatch from our inside correspondent at the seat of government. Here, then, including our news from Havana and Washington, the following significant facts have come to light:— First. L.ATEII FROM EUROPE. [Newspaper Article] — Los Angeles Star — 24 March 1855

L.ATEII FROM EUROPE. Jan*. 12.—Several desertions to the Russians has been reported. There is nothing doing by the British except getting up shot, shell aiid provisions. The French and Russians exchange a few shots, and a constant fire is kept up by the riflemen. Last night was the coldest yet experienced. During the night a body of 250 Russians attacked a point on the French lines, when a short conflict ensued and forty Russians were killed with the bayonet. The French force now numbers eight divisions, 68,000 men, and the ninth division -is ofl the way to the Crimea. Jan. 13.—The Russians celebrated their new year's day within the city with apparent gayety, xVt midnight all the chapel bells were ringing. At one o'clock the Russians within the lines commenced cheering. The French, taking it as an insult, opened fire upon the town. The Russians immediately replied along their whole line of defence by .the lieicestcannonade yet experienced; the earth works flashed forth uninterrupted...
