SPECIAL JAMBOREE SUPPLEMENT TO THE BASTROP COUNTY TIMES Smithville JAMBOREE IPast, Present, and Future By Karla Wallace Never let it be said that the fame of our little metropolis has not traveled far and wide. From the first celebration (with an estimated attendance of 800) to Jamboree as we know it today (with the 1976 attendance estimated at over 15,000), it is apparent that many out-of-towners consider Jam- boree a "homecoming". The Smithville Jamboree began with a Frontier Day celebration in 1947. To get everyone into the "western" spirit a "Stockade" was initiated. This "jail" was a roped off section on Main Street. The Sheriff wore a large badge and locked up anyone not wearing western gear. If a person was found not wearing a hat, bandana, or a pair of boots, he was put into the Stockade to work out his sen- tence or was fined a quarter. "Hard labor" might consist of having to accurately count the sheets on a roll of toilet paper! Alligator wrestling took place on a plat- fo...

— PAGE 2 BASTROP COUNTY TIMES, SMITHVILLE, TEXAS 78957 THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 1977 Jamboree from Page 1 and g«>es strong all three days. The twenty or more rustic booths of Chuckwagon Square, decorated with flying pennants, colorful posters and multi-colored lights are the focal point of the entire Jamboree. These booths are open to any organization or business in Smith- ville, for the purpose of selling a variety of foods to serve to the public. Jamboree is a non profit organization. Where does the money come from to pro- duce Jamboree then? Originally, contribu- tions from local merchants were used to start Jamboree. Booster ribbons and buttons were also sold to raise money. If any profit was made during a year, it would immediately be put into the bank and used to finance the next year's Jamboree. Many people believe that the Jamboree Committee makes an astounding profit from this annual event. This is a misconception. A sufficient amount of money is made to cover expenses and to...
