JUNE 1986 SACHSF SHUT I MEL P*C£ SACHSE REMEMBERED By Mary Allene Jones i I CHAPTER VI: EARLY TRANSPORTATION "From Horses to the Santa Fe, From Buggies to Maxwells!" Before the early 1900s, horses, buggies and wagons were the order of the day in Sachse. J.K. and Mollie H. Sachse had fine saddle horses, buggies and even a sleigh. Often the Sachse relatives would visit each other and "spend the night." During a beautiful late snow in the mid 1890s, Mollie and J.K. stayed overnight with his sister and family, the W.W. Ingrams. At this time the Sachses lived in their ranch house on Maxwell Creek Rd., and the Ingrams lived at Second and Dewitt. J.K. and Mollie rode in the sleigh — but next morn- ing, the snow was gone. J.K. rode the sleigh horse bareback and went home for saddles and another horse. J.K. and Mollie Sachse raised Mollie's youngest sister, lona Herring, as their own. Iona got her first pony in 1910, and her own small buggy in 1912. The buggy arrived via railway freight, and...

JUNE 1986 SACH5E SENTINEL PAGE 21 TEXAS CHARACTERS by Rhae Lumpkin .le can only fjuess what the people living in tne ivueces Strip (betv/een the Nueces and Rio Grande rivers) thought when they first ;aw Lee McNelly. They had asked Ihe government of Texas for pro- tection from the banditos raiding from across the l\io jrande. When the protection arrived. in the spring of 1875. it was in the form of a sickly Texas Ranger leading thirty men. Commissioned a captain in the Texas Rangers and authorized to hire enough men to make up a ran- ger company, McNelly rounded up a few men who had served under him during the Civil War and filled out the rest of the company with raw recruits. He preferred recent immigrants to Texas, men who would not be fighting friends or rela- ti ves. McNelly had fought for the South during the Civil War. At the end of hostilities, he returned to Texas and worked for the State Police. Eventually he became dis- gusted with the abuses of author- ity he saw during re...

Does this mean I have cancer) What can I do? A. Fibro-cystic disease is a condition of the breasts wherein small or medium sized fluid filled sacs develop and become inflamed. It is often a painful and unpleasant condition, but it is not cancer. However, patients with breast cysts are 2 to 4 times as likely to develop breast cancer as women without. We do not know why. Managmeent of this condition requires close observation. Self exam is helpful, but not even the doctor can tell the dif- ference between a benign cystic lump and a cancerous one. Annual mammograms are necessary, and biopsy of the fluid in the cysts may be helpful in certain cases. Other tests are being developed. The number, frequency, and discom- fort of the cysts can be reduced by cer- tain medications, but the increased risk of cancer will probably remai...

jmL SACHSE SENTINEL PAGE 21 DENTAL AWARENESS in/ C '.in tfc i C.i 1 ■ DPS ELECTRICAL BURNS It is the nature of an infant to explore and observe different objects in its environment. However, some of these objects can be very dangerous, especially electrical burns which can result in severe trauma to oral tissues. Placement in or near the mouth of the female end of a live extension cord, incomplete junction of two extension cords, and a live wire in or near the mouth are the msot common causes of the burns. When any of these situations occur, a circuit is completed by the oral tissues or saliva, which acts an electrolytic solution. The resultant heat, which can pro- duce an electrical arc in the range of 4500 to 54(H)0 F. causes se\ere tissue destruction. The upper and lower lips including the corners of the mouth are the sites most frequently damaged. The tissue is charred and there may be some bleeding. Also, the burn may result in tooth loss or the poor align- ment of teeth Withou...
