Ap lpse Mow The well-meaning but weak-playing Omega Code reaches Abilene BY BRYAN TUCK Slowly making it's way into the main- ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR515!"1 m?ic mar.kc!is 'P? ff' a $7 million little movie financed chiefly by the Trinity Broadcasting Network and released by Providence Entertainment. The film did well during it's first two weeks in limited release and it has now come to Abilene. As a Christian I respect any effort to bring biblical princi- ples or Scripturally-bascd story to a wide audience and so I appreciate the efforts of the filmmakers and TBN. Unfortunately the sad fact is that The Omega Code is simply not a very good movie. Casper Van Dien Starship Troopers) portrays Dr. Gillen Lane a "motiva- tional guru" as he's refcred to several times during the film and mythology expert. Lane has written a book promoting a relatively new and highly contro- versial theory that suggests that a hidden code exists between the lines as it were of the original texts of the Bible. Lan...

Turn Your Radio Off Lately local stations have been sporting a noticeable lack of variety By Jason Casselberry Well it's official. Graphics Editor 'Thc radio in my 1987 Dodge charger hatchback has died. Good riddance. Why do I seem so eager to dispose of my radio the only thing that's been keeping my sanity while driving (I can't stand the sound of my engine it dri- ves me bonkers)? Simple I'm fed up with Abilene Radio stations. You sec living in Abilene for 19 years have taught me many things. One you can basically find a church on every corner. Two when it comes to movies all we get is dribble like Double Jeopardy Superstar and Elmo in Grouchland while we're denied critically acclaimed flicks notably the recent- ly released Princess Mononokc a beautifully animated drama by Japanese director Hayao Miyazaki. Three we'll never get any decent music acts to come through town (and no George Strait and The Dixie Chicks aren't "decent") And finally and what I consider most important the A...

Commandments picture has been going. Of course sly devil that he was DcMillc wakes continued from page 13 X3t Red Sea an effect that's still impressive when you consider the technology they had to work with. Tilings lag again as the Israelites move on to Sinai but then it gets going again as God writes his Laws on the stone tablets. By then it's almost over so you're pretty much home free. As a side note I don't think it's ever been confirmed exactly who read the Almighty's lines. Some say Heston some say DcMillc. Whoever it was the recording is slowed down so I couldn't tell. It was definitely DcMillc though who provided the voice of the narrator. At any rate The Ten Commandments is a classic Hollywood epic and as DcMillc's final film it stands as a testament to this master craftsman's talent. Maybe I'm giving an overly secular assessment of the film but you have to view it that way. Most of the important parts of the story arc present but remember this is Hollywood after all. That...

tstlt I f I 1 I I Key of Imagination In order to put away childish things we must learn to determine the dif ference between what is "childish" and what is "grown up' BY BRYAN TUCK Remember the scene in Star Trek: The ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR'0"0" P'icture where Admiral Kirk and Mr. Scott's shuttlccraft circles the Enterprise while it hangs in drydock?. Anyone? Just thought I'd ask. For those of you who don't know much about Star Trek TMP was not one of the better installments of the film scries but there is something about that scene that has always captivated me. As Kirk eyes his old ship for the first time after two-and-a-half years of sitting behind a desk at Starflcct he is no doubt recalling past voyages while simultaneously anticipating adventures to come. As the camera passes over every detail of the great ship accompanied by Jerry Goldsmith's majestic theme the audience can't help but share the admiral's sense of awe. At least I would hope so. Regardless of what the rest of the...

Mind-set and Heart-Set A BY JOHN MARK TiTTSWORTH How should a Christian think? Here is Staff Writer our cnancc t0 write n I want to know what you the readers think. First Peter 2:11 calls believers "sojourners" and "pilgrims." I propose that we should think as sojourners and pilgrims. We arc sojourners in this world because this is not our home. "Our citizenship is in heaven from which wc also eagerly await the Savior the Lord Jesus Christ" Philippians 3:20. The old cliche expresses our response to this fact well: wc told arc to be "in the world but not of the world." How do we do that? The problem lies in our flesh these natural human desires that we allow to control our wills Romans 8:17. Nothing good dwells in our flesh. Romans 8:6 says "to be car- nally fleshly minded is death but to be spiritually minded is life and peace." Because "life and peace" arc quite desirable I assume that being spiritually minded is a mind-set that is a worthy goal. How can wc achieve this mind- set? ...

Cowgirls With Another Great Ride by Mike Sims Atthebeginningof this season the HSU Cowgirl's soccer team was fresh with new dreams and new expectations. This was to be the season that HSU takes the ASC to a new level. As with all things of that kind of magnitude they are not as easily done as they are said. This would end up being one of the tightest most excit- ing soccer seasons yet for the girls. In order to construct the season to be up to its billing Coach Wharton set up the first of the obstacles the Cowgirls would have to face. This obstacle was the tough schedule that they had to play. This was not a normal ASC schedule; it was fraught with the best the ASC had to offer of course and it included top 10 and top 15 teams in Division III. As it would turn out this schedule was more of a stepping- stone than it was an obstacle. The next obstacle would turn out to be reaching the five-loss plateau in mid-season the same amount of losses the Cowgirls had all last season. This sent...

Cowboys Leave the Indians Battered and Bruised 63-28 ii m BOYD ifei GOLDEN by Jeff Potts on November 13 the HSU football squad wrapped up their ninth conference title in the 90's in commanding and impressive fashion. Prior to the game there was enough energy and excitement pumping through the overflowed crowd at Indian stadium to reanimate a corpse. Beginning with the opening kickoff the crowd settled into their seats (for those who were lucky enough to have the luxury of seats) to view what at the outset seemed to be an evenly matched contest between the conference's two premier teams. While the outcome of the game was certainly favorable it was not at all the kind of contest that most thought it would be. The 35-point Cowboy win tied the largest margin in the history of the HRUMoMurrv rivalrv and nrnvpH thpir Hfct. absolute supremacy in the American oouinwesi oonierence. u was a aay ot many records the most important being that the Cowboys completed the season with a per- fect 1 0...

Know Your Foe Just what does Washington University have? by Jeff Potts 1 At this point little can be known about HSU's Saturday oppo- nent except their team name: the Washington University Bears. However after strenuous research by my staff and I we can offer a little more informa- tion. The Washington University Bears were the University Athletic Association's champions for this year finishing with an 8-2 record. Like the Cowboys this will be the Bears first NCAA playoff appearance. The Bears pride themselves on playing tough defense. They finished as the nations third ranked defense in the NCAA's divi- sion III. They are especially stingy against the run but are slightly weaker against the pass (which is obviously the Cowboys strong point). This is not due to a lack of pressure on the quarterback. One Bear defender has racked up an impressive 13.5 sacks. Strong run defense and a healthy sack total defi- nitely suggest that the Bears have a strong defensive line. They have only all...

Message of Hope Luc Besson's new film The Messenger attempts to shed some new light on an oft-told tale. BY ANDREW THOMAS At age 16 most of us could not imagine Staff WRITER rccc'vmS a message from God let alone lead- ing an army. In fact not even Joan of Arc could accept this holy mission until age 17. She then ended up leading the French army against the English. The story of Joan of Arc has always been just a legend to me never a reality. After realizing that Joan of Arc was a real part of French history and not just an icon this film carried a great deal more significance. The history of Joan of Arc goes like this.... She was born in 1412 or there- abouts. Several years later she watched as her home village got slaughtered by the English and her sister raped and murdered by an English soldier. Joan was then sent to live with her aunt and uncle where she spent most of her time in prayer. During this time she had strange visions and receives signs telling her to lead an army again...

Walking the Dogma Kevin Smith's witty and entertaining film defies protests and actually emerges a proponent of faith BY BRYAN TUCK I'm going to go out on a limb here. Entertainment EDiTORTaking il as a movic i lovcd Dogma it is a hysterically creative film that mocks various trivialities of church doctrine while at the same time embracing faith whole- heartedly. The film has drawn some outcry from the Catholic League and other religious organizations who have deemed it blasphemous. The funniest thing about this however is that writerdirector Kevin Smith (known for his "Jersey" trilogy: Clerks Mallrats and Chasing Amy) is a very devout Catholic. I was originally going to write a news story about the controversy but I've decided to take a chance and review it. Dartleby (Ben Affleck) and Loki (Matt Damon) arc two fallen angels who have spent the last three millcnia or so on earth. They learn of a plenary indul- gence being given by Cardinal Glick (Geoge Carlin; that's funny enough in ...

u Video to produce awareness about grades privacy By B.J. Johnson Elementary Newswritihg Five students went to KTXS to film a production that will be used by the Registrar's Office to ensure privacy for students. The five students Paul Zcvcsky Neil Mullins David Hadlock Lindsey Hill and Lance Yocom are in Dr. Darrel Bacrgen's Advanced Broadcasting class. Dr. Bacrgcn got a call from Dorothy Kiser in the Registrar's Office about making a production in order to train faculty and staff about the Family Education Rights Privacy Act or FERPA. The Act states that no one is allowed to view students' grades except the students themselves. Under FERPA parents arc not allowed to view grades without the consent of the stu- dent regardless of who is paying for the education. The production itself was filmed at KTXS in order to give it a professional feel. They used the sports-talk genre very similar to ESPN. While the approxi- mately fifteen-minute production is not complete Ms. Kiser feels that...

Alumnus reflects on 1 2th man tradition Elementary Newswriting When tlie Aggie Bonfire fell on November 18 it plunged several thousand logs onto the many students who were working on and around the stack killing 12 and injuring at least 27. Our state and nation mourned with the Texas A&M campus over the loss of the students who died. This tragedy has called much attention to the long-standing traditions of Texas A&M University. The number 12 is a very familar number to all those who have ever watched an A&M football game because of the most well- known Texas A&M tradition of the 12th Man. The story of this tradition has been passed down through many generations of Aggie students. The 12th Man is the reason that at every football game the A&M students stand for the entire game. When the students stand they do so in loyalty to the memory of the original 12th Man Dr. E. King Gill. The students stand in readiness in case they are needed to go into the game like Dr. G...
