PEACE. [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 15 July 1898

I hear Lhy voice when evening shadows fall; When earth salutes the crimson-sheeted morn ; When rustling zephyrs woo the yielding corn • And nest-forsaking birds their love-mates . call. I see thee in Creation's mute array. For there thy dainty footsteps leave their trace, , When Nature smiles with undistorted face, And forms inanimate their charms display. Bat thou art choicest when thy swift descent Brings sweetness down from God's eternal throne ; When with the perfume of earth's meaner acent The fragrance of celeatial bloom is blent; When from the hearts where perfect bliss is known Thou comest for awhile to fi'! my own. Like ^music's ministry, when, • hushed and still, v With deep surrendered thought devotion kneels, And, o'er the sense of living, rapture steals Responsive to some master-singer's will ; Or like a rainbow, smiling through the tears Which clouds distil when sunbeams glad the sky, Befo-e whose preseuca gathered storm belts fly i To vent their rage in moreuugenial s...

Current Jottings. [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 15 July 1898

Going abroad for news of our selves to-day, I find a leader iti the Melbourne " Age" which contains some comments 011 the coming campaign that are well worth con sidering over to-day. "If," says the " Age," " the Sydney Premier spoke last night forcibly for Feder ation, the intelligent friends of the cause havo 'every reason for satis faction at i t * r >gress. We have Australia de-jiaiing almost with one voice that the time has come for the establishment of a Federal Commonwealth. That is a very comfortable basis from which to start, and if the past labours had effected nothing more than this, they would have been well be stowed. Even the whirligig Mr. Keid and the doubtful Mr. Want now stand irrevocably committed to the cause of Australian union, but we have got much further than that. Not only does every colony know now that its neighbours are federally inclined, but we are all fairly well advised as to the trend of public sentiment concerning what should be in the Common weal...

Notes and Comments [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 15 July 1898

IfotiS tad Samminti [By "Noogooha."] Although the members of the parkes Council are waking up to the necessity that exists tor placing the town's sanitary system on a sounder basis, I think—even after Monday oigbt's special meeting—.they are still a remote diotance from a true solution of the difficulty. The posi tion of the Council is this: The sanitary account its a shade under £500 on the wrong'side'of the ledger, every week adds to the total endebt edness, and we have the Mayor's assurance that even if all the rates levied were collected the Council would not be able to make a financial success of the undertaking. It is proposed to increase the rate from fourpence to sixpence per pan per week, but, great as this advance is, it will not prove adequate to meet ali requirements.' it might enable the Council to pay the nightman, and to reduce the overdraft to an appreci able extent quarterly,, but while this was being done the pans and the cart were depreciating. Consequently, by th...

SUNNY CORNER. [Newspaper Article] — Western Champion — 15 July 1898

SUNNY" 0 O a N. B R. Sunny Corner reports that the Big Hili party has completed a crushing of 175 tons oi stone for slightly over 7dwt gold per ton. ?J?his> yield, though 8aiall3 is paying the holders good wages, as they bt.ve a big reef and easy country to operate on, besides having a long spell of work in eight. This, one of the old abandoned properties in the same neighbourhood, has beeu yielding wages for some tunc. The difficulty of dealing with these large bodies of low grade ore arnea from the lack of crushing power) there bung only one public (five head") battery on the place. The diamond drill procured for a local syndicate in the same centre is being placod in position for the first bore, The syndicate intends if pos sible, to put down it number of bores in the hope Or tracing the continuation of the Sunny Corner lode. Success in this would, it is thought, mean the opeoing up of extensive operations, so that great interest) is naturally mani fested in the trial.

The Liberals anticipate a big major ity in the cifc/ and suburban elector ates.. The Premier was enthusiastically received at Albury last night; Addressing a public meeting in the evening he declared that the time for Barton to show his Federal sin cerity was when he held office, not now when he is seeking office., Ue» ferring to Mr, Barton's candidature for King Division, he said the latter was feeling the shadow of death upon him at Bourke and thought it best to come home to Sydney to die. He was not alarmed at the Federal leader's opposition, tie would not allow it to influence his actions at all. He asserted nothing was more certain than that the Government would return to power with a large majority, whilst the Opposition would consist of 30 or 40 Protectianists and five or six seceding Freetraders. The Licensing Court sits next week. There will be seven or eight applications for conditional licenses for Hiawatha. So far there is nothing known publicly as to where a town ship will be located, so that it may be some time before any of the applicants start building. Mr. Gumming, Railway Surveyor, is at present engaged making a trial survey from here to Hillston, so ta .1 it seems the Minister for Works has not forgotten us altogether. It is to bo hoped that the approaching elections are not responsible for a temporary activity regarding Wyaloug and Wyaloug Wosfc requirements.
