Hospitable Somoa. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 3 July 1913

Hospitable Somoa. The hospitality of the Sonmoamr- according to the report of a travel- ler, excels that of all peoples in the world, ancient or modern. The young Somoan conscience is educat ed to regard hospitality as the first doctrine of the Somoan religion. Board and lodging are secured be fore-hand for every foreigner who may find his way into a Somoan village, and he may' prolong his stay without payment to any length he pleases. A kind of national socialism (or rather municipal socialism) is as tablished throughout the land. Every village contains its ou'n " Falo tale," or guest- house. which is used for the gratuitous en tolnment of travellers. The house lies in the centre of the village, and serves also as the Parliament Ilouse of the local council. When the foreign traveller or the visitor from a neighbouring village crosses the communatl boundary, it is the duty of the first villager who sees him to lead the public guest straight to the communal guest house. Hero he is co...

THE SWORD OF TYR. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 3 July 1913

THE SWORD OF TYR. Our Norse ancestors had many things to contend with besides the aggressiveness of their warlike neighbours. The extreme cold wea ther, the long periods of darkness, lasting half the year, terrible storms and poverty and hunger were for midable foes, and they tended to develop in the North men both com bativeness and superstition. It is not strange, then, that their gods were supposed to be warlike, or that they should think that frost giants and evil spirits'were abroad in that frigid, storm-swept land. Odin, the father of all the gods, while he possessed many attributes and .was. a patron of song and story, was particularly distinguished for his omartial spirit., and possess ed ta marvellous spear, Gungnir, which was endowed with miraculous qualities, and which he always car ried with hint. This wonderful spear was the handiwork of a skil ful smith, a dwarf of the name of Dvalina. Among Odin's sons was one that had inherited, his father's warlike S wnner di rwnori...

How Pets Spread Disease. ----- ALARMIING FACTS ABOUT. CHILDREN'S ILLNESSES. I - Every day someone catches a di sense from some homne pet. Just. because a cat or dog .or some other = pet is well lookedl after, has its coat brushed regularly, and so on, it does not follow that it is clean and free from disease.
