TO OUR FRIENDS AT HOME. [Newspaper Article] — The Telegraph, St Kilda, Prahran and South Yarra Guardian — 28 March 1868

TO OUR FRIENDS AT HOME. By the mail which arrived here in the middle' of the present month, we learn with exceeding pleasure that the reception given to the Duke of Edinburgh in these colonie5 had far exceeded your expectations, anhd given you much Ileasure. This was particulnrly gratifying to us; for if there is one thing we Victolians prize more than another, it is tihe good opinion of the " old folks at home.'" 'This feeling is deep and ineradicable. We ,re proud, althoughlr pushinog our fortunes in this new land, to know that we are still part and parcel ot the grand old British empire. We .vrlue our connexion with the mother c?y.t'--; andi we do not believe there is a sane man amongst us who would deliberately elect to " cut thie painter." We may and we do sometimes kick ant t?1i-gibotl- si;e.s_ ri;nt which the alliance ocensional Seyeessitaiee s he home athorities using; but though on such occasions we may bluster and "talk .tall," we have no serious intention of " setting: up...

GOOD OUT OF EVIL. [Newspaper Article] — The Telegraph, St Kilda, Prahran and South Yarra Guardian — 4 April 1868

GOOD OUT OF EVIL. The frequent evolvement of good out ofI evil is too well known .to reqtirt demonstra- I tion. Apgy one can by a slight effort of nemory repall more or less instances of spch l from personal oliservtipp. But we must not therefore conclude that we may do evil that good shall come. Far from it. We must ovoid its very ippesrance. When its cqm. missiopis ma.le to effect a blessing it is thrq.ugh Divine not human agency. But yesterday these colonies were oiershidriwed by a gresi crime. A.Royal guest, when1 we had been doing all we could to hinrour, 'pd whom we had learned to love, was shot down by a wretched would-be assessin. The hearts of the whole people were bowed down with grief, and they deplored with sincere sorrow the commission of so fonl a deed: .If e nation everprayed fervently to its God, .the Aus tralian community did that tlhe life of the Prince might be spared. Well, t!hose prayers wiro answered, The murderous intention weas frustrated. The Prince lives. H...

ROAD METAL. [Newspaper Article] — The Telegraph, St Kilda, Prahran and South Yarra Guardian — 4 April 1868

RqAD. MEITAL. We qesito concur with Couneillor Vail, that the made adopted by thlie.Prahran Council on Monday evening to eli'it' the relative merits of hand and machine broken metal was ill calculhted to thle proposed end. We have noq been disappointed that it was a thilure--for tail it did, as a perusal of the fiull report we give elsewhere must convince any unprejudliced mind. qn the contrary, our explecrtatioqs have been realised. Buet the discussion was made less usefel than it might have bp~en, by the rigour withl which any ei piession of of "opinion was foribidden. Nothigg but 9 evidence" swould be received. No1.sy e humbly subhit that this question of the relative merits of the two metals has not yet emerged from tht shady region of theory iito tihe broad dayli'gh of established fact. A VISIT TO NEW YORK AND PANAMA. [Newspaper Article] — The Telegraph, St Kilda, Prahran and South Yarra Guardian — 4 April 1868

A VISIT. TO NEW YORK AND :. .. -, PANAMA. The following is the nubstance .of an interesting ecture delivered by the Rev. Isaca Mackay at the Presbyterian Church, Punt Road, South Yarm, in aid of the .building fund of that church. The lecturer, after commenting on the vast re ources of Central America, which it is expected will be rendered available by the completion of the Union 'acifeo Bailway in 1870, gave a vivid description of the principal points of attraction of New York, which, with its 1,000,000 inhabitants, he considered might justly be deemed the second city in the world. The affecting scenes daily witnessed on its wharves, end in English ports, between parting emigrants and tbeir.friends, were described also with great pathos. Leaving New York en the llth of May, in company with 968 fellow-passengers, the varnous incidents of the voyage, including a short notice of St. Salvador, the only bland sighted, were eext briefly .described.
