The Warragul Guardian. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1881. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 15 December 1881

THURSDAY. DECEMBER 15, 1881. THESR appears to be some misunder standing between the Buln Buln Shire Council and its Engineer as to the manner in which tenders- are to be called for. It is a standing rule for the engineer to insert in all. advertise ments calling for tenders the words "no orders taken." There is hardly a meeting of the council but what tenders are received with orders, and in many cases ,they are accepted. About a fortnight since the following special notice to tenderers was in serted at the foot of tender advertise ments :-" Notice to Tenderers. Every tender for works must -be ac companied by a deposit of sixpence in the £ on the total amount, either in minhey6r iimarked chequeoto treasurer. No order will be taken. Tenders which do not contain theafull deposit will be liable to rejection." This notice is .clear on every point, and yet, even- at the last meeting, we find tenders received "with orders,'? and " without the full amount of deposit," We do not know whethe...

A ROMANTIC LADY. In the Damascus chapterof his "Branches from the Mail Routes" "iJ. H." told us of one of the notabilities of that famous Eastern city for whom .he had to make "way at one of the gates-"one Miguel, whose business was formerly. that of acting as escort to travellers fromberetoPalmyra and Bagdad. Fame and fortune favoried this dark man of the desert in an unlooked-for way. One of those for.whom he so acted as guardian was ean English lady of rank and title. Whether he witched her with noble horse manship, or by' hat other witchery he won her I am not told.. Perhaps it was .tent life that had a'clhrni of one ,wearied of the West End of London. Much rather it may be tlst having got sway from the forms of civilisation and its fetters, she asserted itself and chose to her liking.
