CIVIC COMPARISONS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 31 August 1914

CIVIC COMPARISONS. The day-labor waste in the Sydney City services was further exposed the other day in a letter to the press. The correspondent stated that in February, 1912, a Commission appointed to control the con struction of a national highway from end to end of California, completed the official surveys, and by May, .IU1-I-, 100 miles of roadway (consisting of reinforced concrete foundation, with a rock bitumin ous surface bound together with oil) was com pleted, and -J00 additional miles ot roadway were under construction, despite the fact that the Com mission was hindered by a stringent money market. About Februaiy, 1!)12. the Sydney Municipal Council started to construct a road about half a mile in length between the intersection of Park and William Streets and Woolloomooloo Bay, a'nd it is still in a very incomplete condition. At the present rate of progress I am very much afraid (continues the correspondent) the California highway, which is to be eighteen hundred miles i...

THE MOSMAN RESIDENCE. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 31 August 1914

THE MOSMAN RESIDENCE. A Mr. J. A. Sproule, writing to a Western Ameri can paper, selects the Mosman residence as a type upon which to base criticism. He writes: — 'Most of the dwellings are of the ..one-storey cottage type, but there are a large number of man sions and prominent dwellings belonging to those who have .scraped together a '.fortune in wool or medicine. Almost every residence, like the majority of city residences. in Australia, is disfigured with ugly wood boardings in front. The Aus tralian, like the 'Englishman, is a very exclusive animal, and loves to hide his home, rather than place himself before vulgar eyes, by hideous walls of brick or partitioned wood.' ? a ?

"AWAY WITH LAND AGENTS"! [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 31 August 1914

'AWAY WITH LAND AGENTS'! After lustily declaring against Socialism in a vague sort of way, the recent Farmers' conference (N.S.W.) came to the 'following decision: — That in the interests of land settlement the Government be urged to establish information bureaus in all land board and other centres throughout the State. Further, that qualified officers be appointed therein to give clerical assist ance and furnish information to all persons desir ous of making application for land, and receive and forward their applications. 'Make it illegal for agents to act for a land appli cant,' said one delegate. The farmers also de clared for Liberalism, the policy opposed to' the Socialistic principle. The ''Farmers' Parliament.' as the annual gathering is called, upholds the tradi tions of Parliament so far as inconsistency is concerned. A new ordinance has been proclaimed to apply to N.S.W. local authorities in respect to land agents. It reads : — No Mayor or alderman shall vote at any meet ...

THE STUARTS. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 31 August 1914

THE STUARTS. No name is more pronouncedly distinctive of skill in the building trade than that of Stuart. Of course, there are others that loom large in the world of things constructional. But without being alto gether invidious it can be said that a particular dis tinction is associated with the name. This was exemplified at the last meeting of the Master Builders' Association, when Messrs. A. L. and J. Stuart, of the firm of Stuart Bros., were admitted to membership. Mr. J. M. Pringle testified to the training the young men must have had under the head of the firm (Mr. Wm. Stuart), and there was an extra warmth in the applause when the mem bers assembled unanimously accepted the two scions of the building house of Stuart. a. . _ ? . L.G. Engineer McKeown, Normanton (Q.), is at present engaged on a scheme for throwing a bridge over the Norman, a distance, with approaches, of some 000ft.

BUCK-UP AUSTRALIA! The Go-slow System Condemned. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 31 August 1914

BUCK-UP AU STRALlA ! The Go-slow System Condemned. The go-slow system was roundly condemned by Minister [-lagelthorn, of Victoria, in the course of a speech at the recent quarterly luncheon tendered by Air. H. V*. McKay to his apprentices at the Sun shine Harvester Works. Addressing the gathering, which comprised some \'U) apprentices, as well as foremen, managers, prin cipal and visitors, the Minister congratulated Mr. II. V. McKay upon his enterprise in introducing a bonus scheme for the encouragement of young men who were going to be the workmen of Aus tralia. lu no other place throughout Australia, that he knew of, was any scheme of the kind carried on. The apprentices, on their part, were to be con gratulated upon having done their work so well as to earn the proffered bonus. It.' appeared to be an instance where master and men recognised that their interests were identical. (Applause.) Continuing, the Minister said that if Australian workmen needed anything at all it -was dire...

CONTRACT AND DAY-LABOR. Some Convincing Figures. [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Local Government Journal — 31 August 1914

CONTRACT AND DAY-LABOR. Some Convincing Figures. Before anyone associated with construction records his vote on September 5, he should remember that the Labor L'arty stands irrevocably committed to the day-labor system. Not only have its results incurred woeful ex travagance, but the accompanying inefficiency has been shocking. Yet the Labor Party, holding to day-labor, desires its policy endorsed by men who stand for a faith fully-built Australia. Of course, Labor would have everyone believe that day-labor has been a wonderful success, and particularly in the matter of cost. Following is a table made available by Hon. W. H. Kellv, of costs of Sydney suburban post offices, built by contract under the Labor regime^ the npniirtmental - estimates being shown in parenthesis:— ' Auburn, £2350 (£2350). Croydon. £2849 (£3300). Gladesville £2177 ( £2300). Mascot. £3190 (£3500). South Leichhardt. £1187 (£1100). Totals: — Contract. £ 11,753; Departmental estimate, £12,550. Under day-labor the...
