DISCOVERY NEAR CARDIFF [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian — 11 January 1895

DISCOVERY NEAR CARDIFF The Rev. Canon O. J. Thompson, D.D., vicar of Cardiff, writes to the London Tinxes:-" There have lately been discovered near this town, on the Ely Racecourse, the remains of a' large Roman villa. The find was made by Mr. John Storrie, late curator of the Cardiff Museun, who has now been en gaged for the past two months in coh ducting preliminary excavations on be half of the Cardiff Naturalists, Society, they having taken in hand the work of exploration. The results so far oh tained are most satisfactory, proof having been found of the existence of prehistoric dwellings, upon the foundations of which a large and im portant Roman villa was erected. It also appears highly probable that, this having fallen into decay, a smaller Roman villa was built upon its foundations. The remains of the wall at present discovered are of great thickness and solidity. Among other articles discovered are flint arrow-heads, large quantities of tesserm, fragments of Samian ware and...

HOUSEHOLD HINTS. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian — 11 January 1895

iHouSEnoLD HINTS. A hot bath on going to hed, even in the hot.nights of summer, is a better reliever of-insomnia than many drugs. A towel folded, dipped in hot water, wrung out rapidly and applied to the stoniach, acts like magic in case of colic. When going from a warm room out I into the cold air, close your mouth and breathe through your nose, to prevent taking cold. A little powdered charcoal, mixed ] with clear water, thrown into a sink, will disinfect or deodorise it. To clean sponge, immerse it in cold buttermilk, letting it remain a few hours, then wash out in clean water, To keep away insects from birdcages, suspend a small bag'of sulphur in the cage.: This is said to be healthful to birds gerierally. To remove wine stains from linen hold the article in milk while the latter is boiling on the fire, and the stains will quickly disappear. Never turn down a lamp so low that the combustion is imperfect ; it poisons the air beyond endurance. After exercise of any kind do not get...
