The weather was all that could be de sired, but the success of the m.-eting was considerably marred owiiig to the continuous rain which fell from Monday to Wednesday. Consider ing the circumstances, however, the attendance was all that could be ex pected, and although the going was against the "pussies"—the ground being heavy—some excellent cour ses were witnessed, and 17 hares were killed for the first day, a very large peicentage considering the number of courses run. The wants of the visitors wore well catered for, the light refreshment booth being under the supervision of Mrs. Lottghrey, (Donald), and the publican's booth was under the efficient management of Messrs. Shepherd and Holohan, (Geelong). Following were the results. CHAMPIO...

"Boches on the Run." JOYOUS PARIS CITIZENS. TRIBUTES TO BRITISH VALOR. [Newspaper Article] — Donald Times — 21 July 1916

" Boches on the Run." j JOYOUS PARIS CITIZENS. TRIBUTES TO BRITISH VALOR. Never since the war started have the Parisians bean in such joyous spirits. On Sunday large crowds swarmed in the streets, paying valu able tributes to the British soldiers in such phrases as " John Bull has the Boches on the run." Sir Douglas Haig's name was affectionately men tioned. All the French agree that the British-fought with unequalled courage' dash and vigor. The re sults are regarded as remarkable, because the Germans had prepared the most strenuous resistance., The Paris " Figaro" says:—Ger many, the strongest military nation since the days of Rome, whose national industry was war, and who was armed to the teeth, has now found that England, who stepped into the breach, with no army to speak of,* and who did not know what war really meant, has in two years produced armies which to morrow will be the largest on the1 western front. Already she holds up and thrashes the mighty German empire.

The Qoijald TinjB^ With which is incorporated the Donald Expkkss and Lanps bokough Times. Friday, July 21, 1916. Everyone in the community should be prepared to recognise a national duty in regard to the new war loan. Those unable co be in the fight ing front ought to feel a greater sense of responsibility when called upon to aid in maintaining the effi ciency of those who are bearing the stress of the fray. Iu this way we can help to beat the Germans and wiu the war for the Allies in ja mauner which will secure perma nent results. The struggle is being waged for high ideals which are worth some sacrifice. What we are contending for is the right of al nations, great and small, to be free from the aggressiou of military domination. We are anxious to teach Germany that . might is not right, that brutality is not the lever which shall move the world, and that freedom, honor and self-respect are still influences which stir the soul of humanity. - The great ends which are at issue in thi...
