Chapter of Surprises When wo were at the .* university ? Peter Density was a marked man among us. In everything he stood head nnd shoulders above the rest of us. ? One- thing troubled me with refer : ence to Density. He had a little sweet ? heart— Aline was the only name 1 knew tor her— in his iiative town, and' I feared that by marrying a simple country girl he would be less likely to nttairi that career which I felt was In ''.'store for him. I rather hoped he would marry Olga Varenka, a graduate of the girls' seminary near the uni versity where we studied. Olga ap peared to me to promise ns much for .: n Tvoman as Densky did for a man. ?f The only thing I had against her was that she was tiuetured with revolution ary notions, btit as Densky was a man to do his own thinking and seemed to be especially bitter against nihilism I doubted if she would Influence him in this Respect. She gave evidence of be ing 'partial to Densky, and before. he was graduated it .seemed plain to mo that ...

Chivalry in Warfare Japanese and Russian Examples. [Newspaper Article] — The Richmond River Express and Casino Kyogle Advertiser — 7 April 1905

ChivaSry in Warfare . — -^-o:o; ? Japanese and Russian Examples. Chivalry, which is supposed to be distinctively Christian and European in its origin and culture, is really of no special country or creed. Matthew Arnold, in his 'Celtic Literature,' Sutrc-ests that it is pic-Christian and Collie in its origin, and certainly there arc in pre-Christian and Celtic litera: tun: numberless such chivalrous maxims, ;is 'Never make a night at tack or steal a victory,' 'Never hurt the weak, tho wounded, women or children,' 'Reserve your chiefest courtesy for women,' etc. Greek and Roman history, too, is lighted up with deeds of chivalry as notable and noble as any in the Round Table, records. And here, now, are the Japanese, whose very spies are chivalrous. In the early days of the war, Japanese officers, in the disguise of Chinese, were arrested in the very act of blow ing up a bridge over the Sungari River. When they were ranged up to be -shot in front of a platoon of Rus sian infantry, the...
