THE JADED EYE: MOVIE AND TELEVISION REVIEWS [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 7 October 1987

THE JADED EYE: MOVIE AND TELEVISION REVIEWS By C. W. Heiser Because this film is so bound up in politics, and in the politics of the Vietnam war, which for us here and now is still politics in the true emotional sense, I will go straight to the source and review The Hanoi Hilton using Matthew Arnold's three criteria for criticism. That is, and I paraphrase: 1. What is the artist trying to do? 2. How well does the artist succeed in doing it? 3. Does the work exhibit "high seriousness"? (Does it touch the human condition?) Embracing the politics, does the movie still work? The Hanoi Hilton was produced, written and directed by Lionel Chetwynd. In this film, Chetwynd's obvious purpose is to show us the horror and degradation of American prisoners of war of the North Vietnamese. In Chetwynd's presentation, a major component of that degradation is the betrayal of the POWs by fellow countrymen. One of the ways Chetwynd succeeds in showing us the horror of the POW experience is t...

Only The Shadow Knows [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 7 October 1987

Only The Shadow Knows I read in a previous issue of the Capital Times that the Nursing Services Coordinator is trying to line up speakers to discuss AIDS on campus so as to educate everybody so that they will become smjirt and not catch it. I have a few things to say about the issue myself. A good many people claim that AIDS is a punjshment from God delivered upon those wicked people (homosexuals mosjly) in the sinful cities as an example. I have my own views on the subject, which can wait for later. If we were to drag in one physician per day, complete with coffee, doughnuts, and slides in livid color, it would still have no real impression on the average student. I just happened to be in the neighborhood during the last lecture on the subject, and idly curious soul that I am, I walked in and listened. The speaker was very good, but didn't add much to what I already knew. I did learn one thing, however, and that is the titiitudc others on campus have concerning the disease. A...

Penn State Has a Conductor in the House [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 7 October 1987

Penn State Has a Conductor in the House By Joe Kupec If you have been hearing music down near the Lion's Den on Wednesday evenings and it sounds like Vivaldi, Teleman, Bach, or Mozart, it is probably originating from Room W12. Since the semester began, many curious students have looked in on Dr. Ronald Schafer's CMOS 212 class, The Development of The Concerto. Each Wednesday during the fall semester, Dr. Schafer guides a diverse class ranging from Music majors to Engineering Technology majors through the development of the concerto form. Diversity is something this Lancaster native deals with daily. His schedule takes him from class in the basement of the Olmstead Building to the director's podium at Hershey Theatre. In between, Schafer acts as the music director for the Harrisburg Youth Symphony Orchestra and serves as the string specialist for the Dcrry Township school district. His strong emphasis in music education is reflected in Schafer's academic background. He receiv...

Student Activities Coordinator Remembers the Peace Corps [Newspaper Article] — Capitol Times — 7 October 1987

Student Activities Coordinator Remembers the Peace Corps By Dina Walker "The chance to experience a different culture as more than simply a tourist." That's how Janet Widoff, Student Activities coordinator at Capital College, describes the Peace Corps. Widoff spent two years, from 1966-68, in the Dominican Republic as a Peace Corps volunteer. She explained that during the Kennedy years joining the Corps was "the thing to do," plus it gave the volunteers the chance to live abroad. Her parents were not as receptive to the idea since it was a time of political unrest in the Dominican Republic. The news of that time reported U.S. military involvement in that country and made living there seem unsafe. But Widoff felt differently. Having been influenced by professors concerned with "awakening social consciousness," she volunteered for two years of service. Widoff and a group of four others were trained as instructors for the teachers at their site. One day a week was spent formall...
