LIFE^MiBlTTLES 1 . : . . - . __ ¦¦ _ , . . or From i work published in England in 1818 , now first republished in this country j in the columns of the NEW YORK CLIPPEB . Theitraits of Oliver have been so long known to the amateurs of the prize ring , that nothing new can be offered respecting hiVn . Concerning Donnelly it is widely different . He has now shown hU cajjabilitics to the admirers of scientific -pugilism in England ; and the iudgm- * nt pronounced upon his merits is briefly ! this . The Irish Champion has not turned out so good a fighter as was anticipated : perhaps , to be more intelligible on this subject , ho is not that decisive , tremendous hitter with his right h » md which was calculated upon . In fact ; he did not use his right hand at » 11 ; if ie had , he must , in all probability hai-e decided the battle full half an hour ffjoner than it terminated . The Golden Eagle . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 18 March 1854

The Golden Eagle . This powerful bird breeds in the recesses of the sub-alpine country , observes Mr . Macgregor , in his account of America , whioh skirts the rocky mountains , ahd is seldom seen farther to the eastward . It is held by the Aborigines of America , as it is by almost every cither people , to be an emblem of might ami courage ; and the young Indian warrior glories in his eagle plume as the most honorable ornament with which he can adorn himself .-Its feathers are attached to the calumets , or sraokihg-pipes . used by the Indians in the celebration of their solemn , festivals , which has obtained for it the name of the calumet eagle . Indeed , so hi g hly are these ornaments prized . that a warrior will often exchange a valuable horse for the tail feathers of a single eagle .. The strength of vision of this bird must almost exceed conception , for it dan discover . \ i * prey , and pounce upon it from a hight at which it is itself with its expanded wings , scarcely vis...

Englifthand Irish , went to hunt in the neighborhood of a lake called Pies Pond , in Beef Island , one of the smaller islands of the bay of Campeachy . To this pond the wild cattle repaired in herds to drink , and here the hunten lay to wait for them . The chase had been prosecuted with great success for a week , when an Irishman of the party , going into the water during the day , stumbled upon an alligator , which seized him by the knee . His cries alarmed his companions , who , fearing that he had been seized by the Spaniards , to whom the island belonged , and who obose the dry season to hunt and repel their unwelcome neighbors , instead of affording assistance , fled from the huts they had erected . The Irishman , seeing no appearance of hel p , with happy presence of mind quietly waited till the alligator . loos...

:. The Bobber anid the . Snake . * The following anecdote , whieh is extracted from a work entitled , Tales of the North-West , display * * uoh unheard of temerity , hardihood , daring , courage , bravado , and contempt of death in an individual , flail it by any of those terms the reader may think proper , that it scarcely appears credible ; and we do not know in the whole course of our experience , and great variety of reading , ever to have met with anything like it . We recollect that upon the ex-pugilistic champion , Tom Cribb , ( and a man possessing more real or true eourage , is not to be found in tho whole world , ) once being toesed by a bull , that in his rage and surprise at the moment , Tom wished he was a Bull for the Bull s sake ! that he might have tossed the bull into the air ih hia turn ; but let the determined resolution of the robber in his straggl * with the serpent speak for itself :- - •-- : ; ; y ,: - ; y [ Tho boat having arrived at the port ** age * of tho ...
