Field Derrick and Hay Carrier . [Newspaper Article] — Farm, Field, and Stockman — 15 May 1886

Field Derrick and Hay Carrier . ( SEE ILLUSTRATION , 1 ST PACK . ) Hay being one of the leading topics under discussion in this week s issue , we use on the frontpage an illustration of J . E . Porter s , the well known hay-carrier man of Ottawa , 111 ., to whom we have already referred . It illustrates the true principle for a field derrick . By this device you can make a large rick and have a small outside surface of hay exposed to the weather . In stacking with this device the track is a guide for the stacker . making the rick a more regular shape . The hay always drops in the center and keeps it full and well packed , the outside remaining loose , and when it settles the middle remains the fullest and sheds the rain . The rick is not liable to lean , as there is no occasion for the stacker tramping and standing on the edge or outside of stack to receive the hay from the pitcher , which will cause the stack to settle untrue , often causing the loss of a large lot of hay out of ea...
