Since our last issue the base-ball association has held a meeting and appointed a committee to wait upon each student personally and solicit money to go towards purchasing uniforms for our baseball nine . So all may be prepared to meet this request pleasantl y and to respond liberally . The boys have richly earned their uniforms , and now they should possess them . When asked , all should con tribute something . Do not be afraid of giving too much , and remember also that a small sum is better than nothing . THE ILLINI is authorized to receive whatever sums of money former students may desire to send to help fit the boys out in first class style . We hope that considerable liberality will be shown by them in this matter . Let us all aid in putting our team in royal trim for next seasons playing . We want it to be as well dressed as it is well skilled .

We have never taken an occasion to define our belief of the position which the college editor holds with regard to his fellow students , although we have been prompted to do so not only by whatever ideas we possess on the subject , but also by the example of most of our exchanges , who have held elaborate discussions touching this point . Now had we taken up the editorial pencil wholly inexperienced in the powers and limitations of college journalism , we would probably have launched out : at , once into a description of the sway which should be claimed by that autocrat , the college editor , as his right . But we had already done some cautious sounding of the depths and shoals to be steered across , and the result of this had 7 1 made us modestly reticent , for we had found the shoals numerous . So , dispensing with all superfluous theorizing , we will simply say that from observation we believe the college editor has a very perceptible influence in shaping the opinions of the stud...

The faculty has lately been taking measures to restrict the students in some degree from receiving examinations in studies irregularly pursued outside of the classes and without the assistance of professors . That some regulations in this respect were necessary there is not the slightest doubt . The former freedom in allowing examinations to any one at any time , has given rise to a vast amount of hasty outside study , which is necessari ly less thorough than that pursued in connection with class work . Being inferior in quality , as all will ail 111 it that it is , this irregular work if countenanced at all should meet with every discouragement . It must be greatly reduced from its present amount , or before long it will bring serious results not only to the students but j also to the University itself . In all cases I it is unsatisfactory . Although it may enable the student to pass a creditable examination , still the student , if no one else , is aware that the study is not well...

i One of the troublesome thoughts which come to the senior , one which puzzles him more than his thesis and his oration combined , is this , What shall he my woi k after commencement ? This question has probably come to him many times in former years , but never with the force which it begins to have as the time draws near when it must receive its answer . The practical world which calls for a profit in dollars and cents on every transaction lies just outside of the snug college walls where he has associated with the ories so long . The nearness of the time when he must meet this world face to face renders him nervous , for all untried as he is , he can not be sure in his own mind whether he can keep it at arm . - length and in mastery or whether it will beat him down . This is natural . Me may look . at his classmate and think . I Now , that fellow 1 know will get along , j He will study law or medicine , or go to farming , and make money and he happy ; —but how about me ? It would...

We present in this issue an article which sets forth plainl y the principal reasons why this University should never have borne and especially should no longer bear the name Industrial . We can scarcely hope to add anything of value to the exhaustive arguments there given , but we would gladly do so if possible . A name which so grossly misrepresents the purpose of the founders of this institution , and of those who have labored so untiring ly to build it up , should be subject continuall y to open hostility at the hands of all friends of the University . There is reall y no argument of any considerable weight which can be advanced in favor of retaining the present name . The bestowal of it on such an institution as this was clearl y an error . To us students who know and almost daily feel the disadvantages arising from this name , nothing is plainer . Wo do not mean that the originators of the Uuiversity did not know their own p lans , or . what they were founding ; they probabl y ...

As is usual , the farmers institute brought into our midst many visitors from abroad . During three days of last week the halls were thronged with strangers who were drawn hither not only to hear the lectures , but also to see the workings of the institution at which they were held . Many friends and relatives of students were among the visitors . Of course more or less derangement of study and recita tion hours took place during this period of foreign invasion . But now the throng has departed , and all is as before . We think it is a wise plan to thus yearly throw open the University to strangers , who may see the system by which its instruction is carried on , and the facilities which it affords for gaining an education . We say nothing here of the profit which they could not fail to derive from the carefully prepared lectures delivered during their stav .

Everything bids fair to make the students court a remarkably livel y institution this term . Cases for trial seem to be more plentiful than ever before in the history of the court . This fact , which is very uncomplimentary to the students as a class , is probably due more to the unusual energy of the marshal and his assistants than to a greater disregard for the college laws than is the custom . The interest which is taken in the sessions of the court is evidently on the increase . On last Saturday the senate chamber was almost unbearably crowded during most of the day . We think that after this a larger room should be the scene of the meetings . The number of lawyers is also on the increase as well as the number of trials . We would like to see them manage their cases with as little of the trickery of regular law courts as possible . But as is natural , the amount of this is in general bounded only by the lack of shrewdness and knowledge on the part of the embryo lawyer . And when...
