CURRENT COMMENT . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 27 April 1907

CURRENT COMMENT . At the Jefferson DIRECT LEGISLATION , dinner of the Brooklyn Democratic Club , April 16 , Wm . J Bryan declared boldly for the principle of initiative and referendum as the coming Democratic doctrine . He said , among other things : You may differ from me on many things in reference to party doctrines , but if you do not believe in the capacity of the people to govern themselves , which is what the initiative and referendum means , I will drive you out of the Democratic party , because if the Democratic party does not believe in the rule of the people it will have no trouble in driving me out . It would be the strongest point in the Democratic platform , and could only be counteracted by its emphatic adoption in the Republican platform . This direct legislation principle ...

NOTES AND QUERIES . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 27 April 1907

NOTES AND QUERIES . Alfalfa Roots—Red Clover for Seed . — Is It true that alfalfa roots will go so deep as to interfere with tile drains ? Can I sow common red clover seed without a nurse crop and expect to get a crop of seed from it this year ? A . W . G .. Bowling Green . O . —Alfalfa roots are said to go down as much as 15 or 20 feet , and will , under certain conditions . Interfere with tile drains , but it Is usually supposed that where the drains aro working properly and have no standing water tho alfalfa roots will not enter . We have heard of no serious complaints . Clover might be cut for seed the first year If sowed very early and the conditions throughout the growing season were favorable , but a surer method is to cut the second crop of the second year . The first cutting of an old field of clover is usually light in seed as pollenizatlon occurs before tho active working period if the bumble bees , the medium through which pollenizatlon ls effected . I POULTRY j [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 27 April 1907

I POULTRY j PURE-BREDS OR MONGRELS , WHICH ? To one who is interested in purebred stock , or In the ordinary laws o £ the beautiful In nature , the unseemly mixture of breeds which one sees on ninety-nine out of every hundred farms in this country is a continual source cf annoyance and grief . This is especially true of poultry . One farmer begins , perhaps , with Barred Rocks , and after awhile he thinks he will improve the egg yield , and he gets Brown Leghorn males to run with his flock . The next year he gets Buff Cochins , and the next he is still after a greater prolificacy and he hears that the Rhode Island Reds are excellent layers and he adds that blood to the many diverse kinds already mingling in his fowls . In the end they have more colors than Joseph s coat or Jacobs cattle , and they are of all sizes , all qualities of flesh , bare legged , feathered legged , rose combs , single or no combs ; and the whole bunch is as ugly as the imp of ugliness would want anything to ...

WHOLE FAMILY CURED . [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 27 April 1907

WHOLE FAMILY CURED . Of Eczema , Heat Rash , and Falling Hair—Different Ones Troubled . Cuticura Proves Invaluable . My wife had eczema on her face for five or six years . We had read so much j about Cuticura Remedies that we ! thought we would give them a trial . We did so , and It has now been about four years , and she has never had a sign of eczema since . I myself used Cuticura Soap and Cuticura Ointment some time ago for falling hair . I now have a very heavy head of hair and it does not fall out . We used Cuticura Remedies for our baby , who was nearly bald when young . She has very nice ! hair now . She is very fleshy , and we had so much trouble with heat that we would bathe her with Cuticura Soap and then apply Cuticura Dint- j ment , it would dry the heat up so much quicker than anything else .
