Important from the Scat of War. [Newspaper Article] — Sacramento Daily Union — 27 May 1851

Important from the Scat of War. Another Fight with the Indians ! —Troops Retreating.—We are indebted jto our correspondent at Placerville and also to Hunter & Co.'s express, which left ; Placerville yesterday for the following inter- • esting intelligence from the Indian encamp- ; ment. There is no doubt that Major Rodj gers will be successful in raising any number of men requisite to exterminate the Indians, but there is a great scarcity of am- j munition throughout the entire upper country, and orders must be sent here for more, ' before any decisive victory can be achieved: Plack.rvili.e, May 2'>. Messrs. Editors: The Indian troubles in j this vicinity are assuming rather a serious j character. In every rencountre the natives have shown themselves brave, warlike und well prepared. I learn from a gentleman ! just returned from head quarters, that the Indians occupy an admirable position, and that their fire-arms, of which they seem to have plenty, are clean,...

Statement of tbe County Treasurer. [Newspaper Article] — Sacramento Daily Union — 27 May 1851

Statement of tbe County Treasurer. ' To the Citizens of Sacramento City and Co.: A most extraordinary document having made its appearance, simultaneously, in all our morning papers, containing statements so far beyond all possibility of belief, as to carry their own refutation on their face, may. nevertheless, be worthy of a passing notice from the undersigned. This declaration, as one of our papers calls it, commences by saying that the signers have -ascertained I that there has been paid by the citizens of Sacramento City into the County Treasury. \ for license taxes, about three hundred thousand dollars, up to the present time." Now. / have •• ascertained that the above statement is a hu^c and monstrous lie. 1 have further -'ascertained,'' that the whole amount paid by the whole County, including the City, for licenses for Merchants, l'edlers, Retailers. Theatres, Circuses, Shows, Gaming houses, and all. since the organization of the County : up to this time, is less than forty-s...

Geological Observations by Dr. Jag. Blake. [Newspaper Article] — Sacramento Daily Union — 27 May 1851

Geological Observations by Dr. Jag. Blake. [We would invite the special attention of our readers to the following observations suggested by Dr. Blake, during his late tour through the mining country. This gentleman was one of those despatched by the U. S. Government to make a geological survey of the Salt Lake country a year or two since. His researches have been conducted with great care, and his intimate knowledge with the science of geology renders any communications from him exceedingly valuable. The Doctor has promised us other information relative to the quartz vein mining operations, which we shall shortly lay before our readers.] Mr. Eeitor : Having just returned from a short trip in the mining regions along the Yuba, a notice of some of the observations made may not prove uninteresting to your j readers. My principal object was to obtain some information of the geology of the country ; and although the columns of a public journal are not a suitable place for a long scientif...
