Our Story Teller. [Newspaper Article] — Livermore Herald — 22 December 1881

Our Story Teller. BT NELSON C. KALEY, OF DOUGHERTY STATION. THE HA IT XT ED HOUSE A SKKTCfI. In the small town of Allensville, in the Slate of Maine, is a haunted house—at least, everybody who lived within ten miles of the house said it was haunted. The house was in the northern part of town, situated in a deep hollow, on the most unfrequented road for miles around. The nearest house to it was about twenty yards off. This house was unoccupied, as the people who had lived in it were frightened off by the yells and groans that came from tha haunted house. "The Demons' Dwelling," as the haunted house was called, was going rapidly into decay; the land lord could not rent nor lease it, and his excuse for not living in it himself was that it was "altogether too large for him and his family.'" This poor excuse was laughed at by all who heard it, for "they all knew that his cowardice prevented his living in the house. The people who said it was haunted—and they could be counted by dozens — ...

Carp as a Food Fish. [Newspaper Article] — Livermore Herald — 22 December 1881

Carp as a Food Fish. Hon. B. B. Redding, California Fish Commissioner, in a letter to C. T. Harris, of Hills Ferry, asking his opinion of carp as food tish, replied as follows: "Your letter of the loth inst. received. I have never eaten carp in this country. I ate them constantly while traveling on the Continent of Europe. Carp have no positive flavor other than the flavor of fish. No person dislikes them; they are very white and delicate. Trout have a positive definite flavor; so has codfish, and many people dislike them both in consequence of this flavor; but crap have no flavor to like or dislike. There is about this destinction: A radish has a positive fiovor of the radish: so has Cayenne peper, and people eat them; hut a potato has no flavor for a person to like or dislike, and neither has bread. Now. if yon will call radish trout, and carp potato, you will have a clear understanding of carp. The Germans serve them up with various sauces to give them flavor. I think they are ve...

Young Fools that Marry. [Newspaper Article] — Livermore Herald — 22 December 1881

Young Fools that Marry. An exchange has the following item, which may seem all right, bnt it will get some young fellow's back broke vet: An Illinois justice has decided that "courtship is a public necessity and must not be interrupted; therefore, if a young man wanted to kiss a girl, he might put her father out of the room first if he liked.'' The publication of the above item may cause some smart young man to do something he will regret. The lame, ,-dekly looking father of a girl might come into the parlor some night and find the warm haired youth on the sofa with the girl, and they, old man speaks of it being time to put a stop to such nonsense, the young man with the above judicial decision in his mind, will tell his prospective father-in-law to wipe off his vest and go to bed. The old man will then spit on his hand.and grasp the warm-haired man by the county seat and tie him up in a double bow knot, and pin a scarf on him, and throw him out on the path to the gate, then he will...

A Barbarian in Court. [Newspaper Article] — Livermore Herald — 22 December 1881

A Barbarian in Court. The trial now going on at Washington before the civilized word, is in many respects a most remarka- | ble judicial investigation. Should a ; bushy-headed Fiji be admitted to the presence of the Court during i one of those inspirational scenes that have so delighted the aristocratic audience from time to time, and being ignorant of our language, laws, forms and ceremonies of judicial investigation, should be told that what his uncultivated i eyes were privileged to look upon was the trial of the murderer of I the chief ruler of our nation, he [would pronounce our nation a mixtion of fools. Just imagine such [ questions as the following, being i asked by the barbarian ami answered through an interpreter by [an officer of the Court: "Who i> that man elevated above \ all the rest of the people.*' I "He, sir, is the judge who is sup. | posed to be learned in the law, whose duty it is to see that the laws of our country that protect human life, are Justly ...

Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Livermore Herald — 22 December 1881

The livermore post office question is at last finally decided. For upwards, of tea years A. J. McLeod has filled the office of postmaster of our town in a manner satisfactory to our people; and while the new appointee is an enterprising and popular citizen, and will, we believe, nil the office with ability, it is nevertheless a fact that a large majority of our people desire the retention of Mr. McLeod as postmaster. Few country offices have been better conducted, and in none have there b *en fewer grounds for complaint. The office b centrally located, well appointed and it-affairs have been ably administered. The removal of Mr. McLeod was merely a political measure,in direct opposition to the spirit of civil service reform, which is supposed to control administrative acts. "We mean to reflect in i > way upon the conduct of the new appointee, believing him to have aete 1 as would any o her man in the oreml- s but we c nnot but believe that the wishes o- the people, and no...

A Needed Reform. [Newspaper Article] — Livermore Herald — 22 December 1881

A Needed Reform. Tlie laws of California provide that in the event of an individual dying without leaving a will, and without heirs in the State, an officer known as the Public Administrator shall have the power of administering upon and settling up the estate of the said deceased. The fees for this service are fixed by law, being a commission of seven per cent, on the first thousand dollars of an estate, and five per cent, on from one to ten thousand, together with the necessary expenses of settlement, and a reasonable amount for attorney's fees. This commission, except in the case of the Public Administrator, is usually waived by the person settling the estate, the only expense being then the Court fees, advertising bill, and the fees of an attorney, if one be necessary. The Public Administrator, however, holds office for the express purpose of realizing this commission, and therefore never waives it. lie has, moreover, the exclusive right of administration upon the estate of ever...

The receipts | and exports from San h ranciseo Hfimoe Juiv lsr to date have been as 1 follow.-: Receipts, 12,009,904 ctls; exports, 12,299,055 ctls. The i Liverpool advices were of the Bame unfavorable tenor. The market continaed dull and nominal here als-». A few holders attempted to make sales, but met with ill BQccess. The highest obtainable bids wer $156, and in someintanees $1 ••' *vas offered tor wheat which came fairly within scriptions. The suspension of. business continues to be a com- 1 plete one, and at present there is little well-founded hope for betterment. The chief cause of the market's decline, of course, lies in the weakness of Liverpool values. Exporters arc suffering as well as speculators and growers, as is shown by the fact that the outward movement of cargoes is much -lower than it was last month, although there is much ready tonnage in port. Vessels are taking the fu...
