Creature Comforts Two of Jim Henson's best-loved non-Muppet projects have been reissued in sparkling new editions for new (and old) audiences to experience. BY BRYAN TUCK Recently the partnership between Jim ENTERTAINMENT EDITORcnson Potions and the Walt Disney Company ended and a new deal was struck between the former and Sony. Therefore several titles in the catalog arc being rc-rclcascd on video. This past summer the first three Muppct movies were reissued and now the fal has brought us new editions of The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. These two films were Henson's major non-Muppct productions of the early to mid-'80s. Both films have been digitally mastered for terrific sound and picture quality. This is a film that I loved when I was a very young child and it has lost none of its magic in the seventeen years since it was first released. Populated by a cast of only animatronic creatures and elaborate puppets it is one of the most ambitious original and unique fantasy films ever ma...

Going the DISTANCE Alternative group Live returns with third major effort H1 MESS! 9TsmYiFmSlrm Seems like every alternative '90's band and their dogs are putting out a new release right now. While some I look forward to (Bush and Foo Fighters) and some I total- ly fear (Stone Temple Pilots lead singer on drugs is bad. Just listen to Tiny Music and see if you don't believe me.) One that I've been looking forward to is the return of Live a killer band from Pennsylvania. After BY JASON CASSELBERRY releasing the groundbreaking Throwing '- GRAPHICS EDITOR Copper in 1994 and the good but not great Secret Samahdi in 1997 The quartet returns with The Distance to Here a follow up to their '97 release that while good still isn't as groundbreaking as Throwing Copper. At least things get kicked off in the right direction. The newest single "The Dolphin's Cry" starts out haunting but kicks off with the blistering gui- tar work and emotional vocals from lead singer Ed Kowalcyzk that I've come to...

HSU Pockets the Kangaroos By Jeff Potts Staff Writer Six games into this quickly- moving 1999 season the HSU Cowboy football squad stands poised to run away with this year's conference ring. After discarding conference rivals Mississippi College (35-23) and Austin College (50-14) the Cowboys have made the run for the American Southwest conference title a two-horse race with McMurry. Howard Payne also has a chance but with two losses and the task of taking on the Cowboys still to come their title chances look more and more grim with each passing week. Howard Payne is the last team with a winning record that the Cowboys will face before week 10. The Cowboys were able to make October 16 a very satisfying Homecoming for students parents and visiting alumni alike. They did so by never allowing Austin College to find any degree of offensive (or defensive) success. This was apparent from the very first possesion when David Rausch picked off a pass deep in Austin College territory. The Cowb...

N Flying Under New Wings Abilene Aviators try a new attitude this season BY MlKE SIMS Last year the Abilene Aviators arrived to STAFF WRITER bring hc cxctcrncnt of ice hockey to the Big Country. For Abilene this was a first in the sport and for the Aviators it was a first time to be this far south. It showed. The team had its devoted few but support did not come in the kind of num- bers that a new franchise needs. So this season under new ownership the Aviators will attempt to grab the attention of the fans here again. Changes this year include the loss of the star goalie and some more money from a new owner. Concessions are more expensive but parking is now free. As a point of caution they arc also trying a new attitude. At least for now they arc approaching the game with a more wide open offense and cautious defense. Basically they arc trying more finesse than grit. It left them open for big hits and scores last Friday. In their second game of the season the Aviators met up with t...

Yashin...cont. from p. 11 ;i(lmy tactic with sonic good old fashioned interest.) Most assucdly Yashin would claim that it was a strike against management and not against the fans. But when he asks for money who's it going to come from? The owners arc going to get what's theirs and any extras come from the pockets of those of us who arc dumb enough to keep shelling it out. Though it seems doubtful that the fans will win this bout Potcchin remained upbeat by stating that the group has "already won" by making both sides aware of who really owns the team. "Yashin is worht the price of admission. He's an outstanding player no question about it" Potcchin said. "I just find it unacceptable that start hockey players would withhold their services for a buck." Now the question is what do we do about it? We were on the verge of showing professional athletes what we thought about their antics when atten- dance at pro basketball games fell enormously low following a work stoppage in mid season. ...

It is not hard to mistake the changing colors and shifting wind. Fall has arrived. Crayon-colored leaves spread across the weather beaten road and the smell of firewood permeates our newly rediscovered fall clothes. As my father growls "It must be a Yankee that has a fire going this early" I become trans- fixed by a memory in my mind. A playground. Was it the smell of dirty wood that flooded these memories towards me? No. The case at which I relax amidst family and fight regression to a selfish childhood? NO. LET IT SNOW-(l-r) Brian Daniel Ken Snow Colin Peden and Jeff Rogers comprise the Ken Snow Jazz Quartet. Bandmates expand musical horizons BY HOLLY DURTSCHI About a year Staff Writer?0- c Kcn Snow Jazz Quartet was working on putting together a band for an All School Sing interact. They did that and in fact won the interact competition. Since then the band has changed immensely and now the band that began as an interact is hired to play at banquets wed- dings dances and at nearly any opportunity they receive. The band consists of Hardin-Simmons senior Ken Snow playing all saxes and ACU juniors; Brian Daniel on piano Jeff Rogers on drums and Colin Peden on the bass guitar and string bass. Snow was speechless when asked about his inspiration for the band. But he noted that the Professors Jazz Combo at ACU has been great motivation. "They would let me come sit in and I realized that we had the talent to do that. They inspired me to get a group together." Snow did put together a group of ...

m The Effect of Revival W-iL'"- .A 'ST : 1 1 I BY JOHN MARK TlTTSWORTH What happens when revival comes? Staff WRITER Wc are c'ian8c hopefully permanently. God docs not bring revival to give us a reason to meet as a congregation more than twice a week. His name and repu- tation are at stake. He wants us to represent Him well to the world. Recall Matthew 5:15 - "Let your light so shine before men that they mat see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." Revival is evidenced by changes in lifestyle. First John 1:5-7 explains this well: "This is the message which wc have heard from Him and declare to you that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If wc say that wc have fel- lowship with Him and walk in darkness we lie and do not practice the truth. But if wc walk in the light as He is in the light we have fellowship with one another and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin." Do you remember the first four subjects I covered in this column? If t...

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4 hit the country and at least 17000 people were killed. Cities communities and families were shattered. Those who survived faced the brutal reality of the event. Images of the scene reveal piles of rubble and people who have no place f call home. In the past two months the people of Turkey have tried to rebuild their lives. Their efforts have been met with frustration because of the govern- ment's failure to provide relief to these devestated people. c e b c k Cowboys Defeat Howard Payne in Heart-Stopping Fashion by Jeff Potts rw frirVr arm At asrxs seventh win with a victory over Howard Payne in Brownwood 38-34. For the record books this game will go down simply as a four-point victory and a sin- gle mark in the "W" column. However for those who were there this game pro- duced one of the most entertaining spec- tacles in recent HSU sports history. HSU overcame a 34-17 deficit in the fourth quarter to keep Howard Payne from pulling off the upset. The Cowboys were able to pull this feat off even though basically everyone in the stands (sadly including me) had written the game off. This game changed complexion several times and ended with a Cowboy victory proving that anything can happen in the game of football. The beginning of the game seemed to be governed by some degree of nor- malcy and the first quarter ended with a 10-6 score that did not seem out of the ordinary. Quarterback Brad Boyd hooked up with flanker Barry Donham fo...

HSU Soccer Grateful for Support by Sam Grammer soccer games at i 1 fjne'chor Shelton Stadium are not accompanied by flipping cheerleaders and official mascots. The players' shouting at the last home game was at no point drowned out by the patterned drum-beats of the World-Famous Cowboy Band. No proud fleet of purple and yellow balloons left the stadium nor was there any exciting halftime choreography. Instead Hardin-Simmons soccer games are characterized by their own forms of the festivities commonly seen at more "popular" sports only on a smaller scale. Those who attended one of the last home games did actually hear drumbeats see a goofy mas- cot and take in some exciting "choreogra- phy." Each of these things contributed a dramatic element to the total soccer experi- ence that night. Two dedicated fans and two overturned trash cans voluntarily assumed responsibili- ty of lending a beat to the excitement of the Cowboys' recent game against the University of Texas at Dallas. Down 3-...

REC SPORTS ANYONE FOR PICKLEB ALL? Many out there have never heard of the sport nor wish to but the few out there who know what it is sure love the game! Last week we held our annual pickleball event while some came out with the sole intent of "making an appearance" others came out to play! Heavy favorites Paul and Tina evidently had an off night- WAY off night and were taken out in round one. Sal and Laurie (all - state pickleball players) ended up winning the co-rec doubles. Mike and Sal took out Kane and Eric for the men's doubles. The last bracket- men's division Paul and Mike went at it - the best of three games. Mike dropped the first game but battled back and pulled it out for his first pickleball championship. After the tournament he said something about "Going to Disneyland.?!" Don't worry folks we'll have another pickleball tournament next semester. Flag Football The results are in...
