August 31, 2006 - The Sachse Mews - Mustang Round-Up - Page 3 Mustangs plan an aggressive, attacking unit By Greg Ford The mission of the Sachse defense . is simple. "We try to dictate what the offense is doing," defensive coordinator Josh . McKiddy said. "We don't let them 'dictate what kind of defense we're running." That goal, at least on paper, will be accomplished by executing a game plan that calls for the Mustangs to be an aggressive, attacking unit, which in 2006 will rely more on grit and quick- ness than size. In a couple of years, McKiddy said, ihe Mustangs may be able to bulk to that mix. when the current freshman and sophomore classes become jun- iors and seniors. For now, though, it's an undersized 11 lhat will consist of mainly, seniors, many of whom arc "unproven guvs." the coach said, because they were var- sity members in 20()5. but did not get much playing time. The following is a breakdown of the defense and its potential starters. Defensive end: Senior. Blake Ba...

August 31, 2006 - The Sachse news - Mustang Round-Up - Page 5 Comerbacks add aggression to overall strategy continued from pane .1 individual, who fits the mold of the "pluggcr." His job will he to chase down hall carriers and lake on blocks. In 2005. Korey Williams, a Hurricane Katrina refugee, manned the middle for the Mustangs. However. McKiddy noted, he's returned home to New Orleans, and this season senior Joe Gonzalez (ISO pounds) will handle those duties. "He's got to understand the entire defense," McKiddy said. "He's got to understand how to gel guys lined up behind him and in front of him. He's also got to be a playmaker, and aver- age 20 tackles a game." Gonzalez is moving up from the junior varsity, where he spent a sea- son after transferring from Garland, the coach said. "He's got a good knowledge of the defense," McKiddy said. "He knows what happens in front of him right now." Cornerback: This area could be the team's strong point, especially with junior Tim Lee handl...

Page 6 - Mustang Round-Up ■ The Sachse Mews - August 31, 2006 Offensive positives outweigh negatives By Greg Ford When Sachse's spread offense takes the field in 2006, it will do so with a new quarterback, a larger and deeper receiving corps and a more athletic offensive line. All in all, the positives seem to out- weigh whatever negatives there may be. and that means the Mustangs could be a point-scoring machine. Whether that will be enough to secure a playoff spot will not be determined until District 10-5A play concludes. However, the Mustangs do seem to have enough horses to give it a run for the money. The following is a breakdown of the 2006 Mustang offense. Quarterback: Chad Winget demonstrated during the spring and summer that he's the heir apparent to Josh Phillips, who ran the Mustang attack the previous two seasons. During that period, Winget, a 170- pound senior, honed his skills on the junior varsity. "He's an extremely accurate passer, and he's got good presence," Sach...

Page 12 - Mustang Round-Up - The Sachse Mews - August 31. 2006 Mustang speed to stretch the field continued from page 6 to get worn down." The outside receiver duties will be handled by seniors Brock Tallent and Brandon Helm on one side, and senior Malik Cardwell and sophomore Troncais Banks on the other. The former, are expected to handle much of the possession-type receiving, while the latter have the speed to stretch opposing defenses. All are more than six feet tall. Helm was an honorable mention All- District receiver in 2005. The slot positions will feature senior Andrew Mason, who saw time as an outside receiver last season, and 245- pound senior Quentin Holloman, who will handle the H-back duties. Part of the latter includes lining up at fullback or tight end, as well as in the slot. "He's a versatile kid," Sanders said. Backing up Mason will be junior Russ Johnson, while Hunter Dugan will do the same for Holloman. "We're a lot faster than we were a year ago," Sanders said. ...

August 31, 2006 - The Sachse News - Mustang Round-Up - Page 13 Emert, Winget leading Mustangs through season By Greg Ford When the 2001 New England Patriots were introduced as a "team" at the Super Bowl, the moment empha- sized their one for all and all for one attitude, which helped carry them to the first of three NFL titles. In 2006, the Sachse Mustangs are taking a similar approach, emphasizing that each unit on the team is dependent on all the rest. Offensively, the Mustangs will rely on a spread attack passing game to loosen opposing defenses, and that means quarterback Chad Winget must get the ball to his receivers. In turn, Winget, a senior and first- year starter, will need time to throw. That responsibility falls on the shoulders of what will be a relative- ly inexperienced offensive line. Fortunately for the Mustangs, they have a solid anchor in senior tackle Blake Emert, who fully understands his role. "I think of myself as the leader of the offensive line," Emert said. ...
