A FLY FARM. 1'he only fly farm and training stable for insects is owned by Mr. F. P. Smith, a young official in the ser vice of the Locul Goverrnment Board (writes a London paper of NovPm ber 13.) In demonstrations at the fly-farni at Mr. SEnith's house in Is singrton highly-cducatctd flies perform reoiarkstble antics. A fly will lie on its back and keep a ball revolving with its feet for hours at a stretch, or: sit on a chair, dressed in a spe cially-cut silk gown anmd cap, and nurse a doll. So perfect aree t?he pr formances that ci~enatdgraplt records have been talen of them. Olher in sects besides flies have 1.een trained !n.y this young Government official. He has taught a spider to run up a stick and take food held out to it. A lizard which hIe has in Iris posses sion will take and hold at cigantte, in its mouth, but resolutely refuses to smoke it.

CART SINKS IN A ROADWAY. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Times — 20 January 1909

CART SINKS IN A ROADWAY. Whilst driving' two horses attached to a dray laden with firewood tbrough North Fitzroy yesterday afternoon (says Friday's Melbourne "Argus"') Mr. Johly Watt, of South Preston, had a sensational experience. In Fergie street; on the north side of Szotch a.?er-street, the vehicle, on which their was nearly two tons of firewood, sud denly sank bodily in the roadway to a depth of about fit. The horses were dragged down on their haunches, and the driver, who was seated on the dray, got a severe shalking,,besids be ing struck with pieces of wood, but he escaped serious injury. The work of extricating the horses and dray was accomplished with great dillaculty, and the chasm in the roadway was endos ed by posts and rails for the safety of traffic. The subsidence was due to the fact that a Gin water main had been leaking for some thue, and had gra dually caused the earth to drift away, leaving only a thin crust on the sur face.
