I feel sure that you will allow me a small, space in your' columns — not: to justify myself, for of that I have no nt«d — but to explain certain things in connection with these cases. Father Gdktxlf:, a Franciscan priest, who is now at San Francisco, has received a letter from China wliielt states that his brother, a mis sionary in the province of Shen Si, has been tortured in the most brutal maimer.
