STAMPING OUT CRIME. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 21 January 1880

STAMPING OUT CRIME. That effective . measures will eventually have to be adopted to wipe out tbe cursB of violent crime becoming rampant amongst us, we have little doubt. The latest act of Moon lite and his gang are lessons that should suffice to induce, the making of laws that should show no mercy beyond the intention ol law enncted. .And.we sinoerely.hope that | the farce of altering senteqpes passed on men morally guilty pf the death pf a -fellow man will never be. allowed again in a . community wlKre tbe merest tyre should have been able to decide as to the guilt or otherwise' of the man wlip bava .escaped tbe penalty of death. The Standard, noticing tbe great increase of crimes of violence, say* that it becomes a question- -whether some sharp nnd severe means should not be taken'for their repression. That brutality mii&t'be 'repressed is a' matter upon which nil are agreed. But the most effectual deterrents cannot be applied without provoking opposition. If we suggest t...

THE SUFFRAGE AS A RIGHT. [Newspaper Article] — The Hay Standard and Advertiser for Balranald, Wentworth, Maude... — 21 January 1880

THE SUFFRAGE AS A Rl6ET. Despitb the practical 'abbmaUes of otf r demo cratic system, which actually renders the fran chise useless and inoperative to nearly one-hslf of our population, tllere is probably no oiie who does not believe finbly ill tins priiiciplfe, that a vote in the choice of oar representatives is a right iftheretit in every one of our : citizens. And yet it mil be foand extremely difficult to show any reasonable ground for this opinion, while it is vno of the easiest things in the world to show that if the suffrage is an inherent right, i it ought logically to be far more widely extended than it has been. The idea of this inherent Tight ia an entirely modern one. It lias been taken up, indeed, and defended by classical scholars and philo sophic statesmen from the Athenian model, but these writers appear entirely to forget that the Atizent of Athens, who were all entitled to share in the government, and to whom the' govern ment was exclusively confined, did not form ...
