DOUBLE LIVES. (THE WORLD.) [Newspaper Article] — Oakleigh Leader — 22 December 1888

DOUBLE L?VES. (fRIE 'WOiLD.) IEven cuiiy eousiderod, thile process of riving a double lifo fdr a lengthenedpriod, whie is implied in a sustained career o e y -te matie imrosture like that recently snspended in the ease of mrs. Gordon-Baillie by a sentence of penal servitude, seems to suggest some curious peycholoidol problems. In one sense, no doubt, we may all of us be said, with mnore or less aecuracy, to live double lives. It may be plausibly eontended that our exist ence is in the very nature of things esseutially twofold. It has its esoteric as well as its exoteria aspect. It has its closed and hidden not less then its open and revealed aido. WeVo edh of us lire a life of thought and feeling which is known only to ourselves, and a life of speech and action by which we are known, to other people. How far fhe second may be the .rellection or counterpart of the first depends in evcry particular case on circum stanuces. iBut between the two there, is, and there must always be, some...
