MY WIFE'S NEW FRIEND. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 1 December 1881

IJY WIFE'S NEW FRIEND. Mrs. Jones has quite a habit of cultivating sudden friendships, which have every ap. pearance of blooming eternally, but which soon wither in the world's cold blasts. I used to think this characteristic wasconfined to school girls, who promise immortal fidelity in letters, crossed and re-crossed, but forget each other as soon as they have caught a lover. My wife's last acquisition, in the way of a bosom friend, is.Mrs Mortimer Mowbray, with whom she became acquainted last Summer, while.we =were boarding out of town. Mrs. M3'otimer i"Mowbray had her carriage with her, 'and ~ieated quite a sellsa tion; in fact, every lady. in the house was eager to become her confidant; but the amiable deportment of Mrs. Jones, combined I doubt not, with her intellectual accom plishments, rendered her the favorite; and she it was who daily occupied the spare seat in the coach, and had the honor of advising Mrs. Mortimer Mowbray in those thousand grave perplexities under which wo...

Tales and Sketches. THE PISTOL SHOT. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 1 December 1881

Capls aukhketrwa. THE PISTOLi SHiT. Panse vEx saEca or AuxrFaA zSis GrzrTCun a PoraUw.s We were quartered at -. The daily routine of an officer in the army is not un known. Drills and riding school in the momning? i a ;- t the amm+?d ang?qua:-. ti or in Jewish iating.bos, and cards and punch in the evening, constitute the day's work. There was no society at -, nor-were there- any marriageable-girls; we used to meet at each other's rooms, where only men in uniform were to be seen. One civilian, however, was admitted within ear circle. He might have reached the age of five-and-thirty, and we therefore looked upon him as greatly our senior in years. His large experience - secured him a certain amount of deference, and his usual morose ness, his stern and sarcastic disposition, ex ercised a powerful influence over our yonthl imaginations. His past career seemed shrouded in mystery. Though bearing a loreign name, he was pparently a Rnssan. He had served at one time in the huasars, and ha...

LORD BEACONSPIELD.: SOCIAL RE.1INUISCENCES. Tien during the last few years, living at Hughende-. aim: necessarily in seclusion, that to many would have seemed solitude-he found his retirement blessed by memories and bright ened by imagination. THE FATE OF THE SPANISH ARMADA OF 1588. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 1 December 1881

THE FATE OF THE SPANISH ARMADA OF 1588."   The great Armada which, in 1588, was pre- pared by Philip II of Spain to conquer Eng- land and Ireland, in order to crush the Pro- testant religion in those countries, and to punish Queen Elizabeth and her subjects for their apostasy from the faith of their ances- tore, will always be considered an interesting historical event. As is well known, the pre- parations of Philip had lasted eight years, and were on a great scale. A fleet of one hundred and thirty-two large vessels, com- manded by the Duke de Medina-Sidonia, carrying three thousand one hundred and eighty-five guns, and about thirty thousand soldiers and sailors, sailed from Lisbon;   while an army of forty thousand men under the Duke of Parma was assembled in Flanders to co-operate with the Armada. On the 20th of July, the Spanish Admiral having re- ceived information that the English fleet had taken shelter in Plymouth, made for that port, in order to de...

CONCERT AT WATERLOO. The roennetirl Waterloo on Friday evening lost in aid of St. Mark's Church of England nwas a complete success, and weo regret that pressure on our sn?ne through the lengthy shire advertisement and council reports which appear elsewhere compels us to put on one side the detailod report which is already In type.
