THE LATE PRIZE FIGHT. [Newspaper Article] — Kerang Times and Swan Hill Gazette — 4 April 1879

THE LATE PRIZ!, FIGHT. Commenting on the late prize fight the Sincator, says :-" Owing to the negli gence or want of sagacity of the New South Wales police, what is` called the "cham pion" battle " between the representative bruisers of Victoria and the sister colony" has, after all, been fought to the bitter end on the other side of the ?urray. An evening paper in this city published two columns of details of this scandalous affair, from which it seems the two prize-fighters beat each other between one and two hours, and in the fifteenth round a terrible blow from the conqueror on the ribs of his op ponent knocked him down, and " turned him completely green." Still, he rose again, and made a faint attempt to resume the contest, but was so entirely at the mercy of his antagonist that he had at length to fall cn his knees; and we are told that "li he was then fearfully punished about the head and faca, and pre sented a truly pitiable sight." This sickening spectacle was witnessed by ...

SELECT POETRY. THE FIRST WHITE LOOKS. [Newspaper Article] — Kerang Times and Swan Hill Gazette — 4 April 1879

SELECT POETRY. ----o- TIHE FIRST.IVHITE LOOKS. [ By WILIAX JONEs.] - They tell me that old age creeps on, And truly I can trace, In blended frame and alter'd brow,P HIis sure and stealthy pace. The pulse, no longer fed by youth, Beats languidly and slow, And Time hath laid his stern impress -Upon these ldcks of snow. But still though Winter reigns without, The heart within'is warm, 'And has not lost its keen delight In all that once could charm. I love the merry naugh and song, The spirits' genial flow, Though Time has laid his stern impress Upon these locks of snow. And Nature smiles as lovingly As in the days gone by, Although the -weight of added years Bath somewhat dimm'd mine eye. The green fields and the summer llow'rs Still fresh in beauty glow, Though Time hath laid his stern impress Upon these locks of snow. - I'he friends I knew have pass'd away, .-13ut there are others vet To canlmthe thoughts of youthful days,.
