The Marriage Question. [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 24 October 1885

Tile Marriage Question. The recently published part of the Statistical Bogiiler of the colony of 'Victoria, gives some items regarding the bachelor-tax proposal, peculiarly inter esting at the preseit timo, when marriage is attemp ted to be promoted. by Act of Parliament. We cum mend the following brief notes to Mr. Bbn?kc)lV ptrueal: — In the year 18:4, 7218 marriages wore consummated in the sister colony, of theso 19 were Chinose, and 9 aboriginals. Autumn and summer ate the fashionable months according to tho register. The fashionable ago appears to bo from 25 to 30, on the part of males, and from 21 to 25, cn the part oi females. A note to this item remarks that two men between the ages of 45 and 50 married girls between 16 and 17, and three women between tho ages of 40 and 45 married men between 21 and 25. More bachelors marry widdows than widowers marry spintters. : this arguos that women experience better treatment at the bandB of the sterner sex, than do men at the hands, nf...

No title [Newspaper Article] — Balmain Observer and Western Suburbs Advertiser — 31 October 1885

Pressure of late advertisments on our space compels us to exclude all leading articles from this issue, and other items of interest. 1 Although little room is available in this issue wo cannot help referring to the ban quet given to Mr. Dibbs at St. Leonards last Tuesday, where two hundred gentle men assembled to do honor to the defeated Premier;, and as, no-. doubt, tho wine was good it brought out some novel ideas ot the present political situation. For instance -we are told that .Mr. Dibbs is to get' a good working majority, if not 2 to 1. There is nothing like meeting one's misfortune with good cheer j but the Premier will have to startle the world with proposals for attrac tive and useful legislation before ho will turn an Assembly - composed of 29 Minis terialists, 29 Independent members, and 44 stated Oppositionists over to his side. The Bad and Worthless are never imitated or counterfeited. This is especially true of a family medicine, and it, is positive proof that tho reniedy imitated is of the highest value. As soon as it had been tested and proved by the whole world that Hop fibers was the purest, best and most valuable family medicino on earth; many imitations sprung up and began to steal the notices in which the press and the people of tho country, had expressed the merits of H.B., and in every way trying to inducesuffering invalids to iiso this stuff instead, expecting to make money on the credit and good name of H.B.
