The Chronicle. TUESDAY, JULY 31, 1877. [Newspaper Article] — Camperdown Chronicle — 31 July 1877

TUESDA Y, JULY 31, 1877. FOR the smallest mercy, let us be thankful. Geelong is now in direct com- munication with Colac by rail. The line to the latter of these places was opened on Friday last, amidst much rejoicing, and no little dissension. By this means, we have been brought some hours nearer Melbourne, than we were two years ago, or less. We can now leave Camperdown at midnight, and be in Melbourne early next morning, or leave Melbourne late in the afternoon, and be in Camperdown at midnight. So it has been arranged, at any rate, for the present, and we are sufficiently grateful for it, although not by any means satisfied. Granted, that this will in many respects be much to our advantage, yet it might have been more so. Had not the Legislative Council struck the Camperdown line out of the Railway Construction Bill of 1871, it would have been completed long ere this, and we should have had nothing to complain of. But that it should not have been included in the bill now before ...

The usual loyal toasts having been dis pose l of with the customary honors, The Chairman proposed the health of the G( vernor, which was drunk with hearty cheers. HisExcellency, in responding, remarked th;at he was very grateful for the exceed ilj:ly c?thlisiastic manner in which the to ,as had been received. This was not his tirst Nisit to Colac ; indeed, he would have been showing very bad taste if, during his four years residence in the colony, he had not taken advantage of more than one opportunity to visit their tile lake...
