VICTORIA. MELBOURNE, July 22. [Newspaper Article] — Townsville Daily Bulletin — 23 July 1907

VICTORIA. MELBOURNE, July 22. The finance-committee of the Boara of Works have recommended the ac ceptance of the A.11.P. Society's offer to take up £300,000 worth of debentures. The police discovered a complete spurious coining plant at Dooklo Agri cultural College last evening, and ar rested the alleged owner, a young man, in his room. Beside the plant was a tin box which contained a large num ber of spurious coins, mostly two shill ing pieces and half-crowns, and GO other coins were discovered ready for circulation. Accused arrived from Melbourne three months ago, and was employed as pantry hand at the col lege. Latterly the matron missed a large number of silv.-r spoons. It Is believed accused sent coins to friends in the city, most likely to Echuca, where a large number of them were passed during the past few weeks. The coins are a splendid imitation, and could only be detected by the ringing of base metal in them.

The Premier (Mr Kidston), on being interviewed regarding the political situation as affected by the Labor party's desire to sit on the Opposition cross benches, said the situation was not altered. The Labor party had never been supporters of the Govern ment, and he laughed derisively at their statement that ther action was not an Indication of hostility towards the Government. He remarked : ' Of course not.' There are strong rumors that a Kidston-Philp coalition is probable, and these are height ened by the fact that Mr Kid ston, in reply to a leading question, said he expected to be in a stronger position this session than last.
