SIXTEEN HUNDRED LIVES LOST! [Newspaper Article] — Goulburn Herald — 9 January 1861

SIXTEEN IIUNDREI) LIVES LOST! (From the Bristol Mv ercury, October 13.) Tin terrible accidents upon our coasts which distinguished the autumn and winter months of 1859 led us to anticipate a dismal story from the mercantile department of the Board of Trade, when the statistics of the twelve month should be completed, and we have not been disappointed. The "Wreck Chart of the British Islands," compiled from the Government tables, and which has just been published by the National Lifeboat Institu tion, surpasses all its predecessors in the dis tressing picture it presents to. us. Every wreck on our coast has its little black mark, and the aggregate number of such marks from the Land's End to the Solway, and from the South Foreland to Berwick, is absolutely startling. Taking the whole of our coasts, we have no less than 1410 wrecks of ships, of which 537 were totally lost as wrecks, and fifty-eight more were sunken by collision; while in tihe remaining 831 cases the ships, either by st...

POETRY. TO E. W. THY CURSE WILL BE TO THINK. [Newspaper Article] — Goulburn Herald — 9 January 1861

POETRY. TO E. W. TIY CURSE WILL BE TO TIIINIC. IY i. IIr. Our hearts are joined by solemn oath, Our hands scaled those vows in ink, And witnessing angels e?oehd forth, Perjured I thy curse will be to think. Too truen their words. False art thou : Honor, virtue from thy breast did shrink; Long cast aside that holy vow ; And memory's curse is n?w to think. Where now thy lhappiness or joy ? Thy baseness broke its only link : For gazing on thy infant boy Thy curse is still to think. And that pure heart which fondly bent, And at thy follies oft did wink, Now mourns thy bill and vile deceit; While thine the curse to think. I can forgive thee : too powerful thy foo Who led thee towards destruction's brink. Then haste, return, and mourning show Thy bliss has been to think.

No Title [Newspaper Article] — Goulburn Herald — 9 January 1861

To-sto sow is the day fixed for the re assembling of parliament. The country having been appealed to on the great question of free selection befbrore survey, has returned so large a number of new men, that it is scarcely possible to predict what will be the future course of legislation. The ' Sydney Morning Herald,' lamenting the changes that have taken place, endeavors to show that scarcely sny of the former members have been returned; and that the country has acted most suicidally in rejecting them. But there is still a very considerable number of the former memnbers in the Assembly - in many cases the old mem bers did not offer themselves for re-election, and therefore the country has not had anything to do with their retirement-and as a change does not necessarily imply an improvement, so neither does it necessarily involve a deterioration. In looking at the composition of the new Assembly it is scarcely possible to get rid of political prejudices and prepossessions. These tend ...

On Monday last, the adjourned public-meeting respecting the presentation of the address to Mr. P'almer, in testimony of his enterprise and per severance in bringing the moegiethon from Sydney to Coulburn, was held it the town-.boall, at five o'cloeck p. I 'ino meeting, though not namerously, was res ectably attended. As chairman of the previous mcoting, of whichi this was merely an adjournment, the mayor took the chair. MIr. Rocnr Caont said that it had been pro posed that there should be smoqe fiurther delay in the presentation of tihe testimonial; but as Mr. Palmer was about to leave, it was, on ithe whole considered best that it should be done at once. Up to the present time some £54 had been subscribed; but the whole of this was not yet paid. SYDNEY. Saturday afternoon. [Newspaper Article] — Goulburn Herald — 9 January 1861

SYDNEY. (From ouw owon Correvposndnt.) Saturday. afternoon. TuE revenue returns for the year and quurterjust ended have been published, and I am sorry to say that they show a considerableo decrease in the income of the country. The greatest falling off is in the land revenue, which shows a decrease of £165,023 12s. 3d. on that of the preceding year. The whole decrease in this year's revenue as compared with the last is £204,382 2s, 9d. This falliug off may be in some degree aeccounted for by the separation of Queensland, and in this respect the decrease in reve 'nue will be compensated by the reduction in expen diture; but it is not quite satisfactory to see such a decrease under any circumstances. It will necessi tate great economy in the expenditure, and I am afraid that some of the young gentlemen who levy on her Majesty's treasury for the kid gloves and peg tops wherewith they adorn society, will have to look farther a-field next year for their superfluities. The case of Mary O'...

JIIISCELLA NEO US. RAISING NEW VAIRIETIES OF GRAIN OR OTIIEIR CROPS AND SAVING SEED.-Sm0e years since, while looking through the wheat crop of a friend, we observed a very fine wheat plant having six ears distinctly different from the surrounding crop, and look ing so much superior in every respect that we suggested to our frieind to mark it and save it for seed, whether it were a new variety or not, and then to save the following year the produce of the six heads saved at that time. I t was a light sandy soil whereon the wheat was growing, and did not appear to be a most fathvourable kind of soil for wheat, although, a pretty fair crop was obtained from it. Our friend took our advice and saved the seed from year to year, nud has this year half an acre of the variety, promising to yield, under similar circumstances as regards soil and cutil tivation, a far better crop than a common red wheat growing alongside of it. A distinctive feature of the variety we refer to is, that it produc...
