TO THE ELECTORS OF TUMUT. (Per favor of the Tumut Sc Adelong Times.) [Newspaper Article] — The Tumut and Adelong Times — 20 November 1865

TO THE ELECTORS OF TUMUT. (l Per favor of the Tumut St Adelong Times.) Gentlemen, — The time is now approaching When the collectors of the electoral roll of thin district are to bo appointed. It therefore behoves you to see that competent, honest men are appointed, and do not allow yourselves to be disfranchised as many of you were laBt time by some of the late collectors, who omitted a number of your names and never called at your houses, which must have been done through m^lect, incapacity, or some other cause, and for which you well paid them ; there was certainly one (Mr. Smith) who did his duty honestly and atten tively. Hoping you will take this hint and keep a look out, and see how the appointments are made, as you do not know how soon you may be called on to exer cise your rights, . .. I am, Gentlemen, yours, &c., AN ELECTOR. November 18th, 1865.

THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN CORN DISEASE. (To the Editor of the Register.) [Newspaper Article] — The Tumut and Adelong Times — 20 November 1865

THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN GORN DISEASE. (To the Editor of the Register.') Sib, — Some months ago, when I commenced my in vestigation of the corn disease, it was in its first stage of growth, and was only visible in separate not exten sive parts. The results of my experiments I published at that time, which were chiefly that the rich alluvial soil in those places was deficient of certain elements which are positively necessary for the nourishment of the corn plant, and that these elements are prin cipally the carbon of lime. Since then the disease has developed itself with full force and startling rapidity, so that it favoured my examination in a high degree, the results of which I am now able to publish. I have visited extensive districts in the South, as well as other regions, and have found this destruc tive disease everywhere. Grunthal, Oakbank, Woodside, Gumeiacha, Hahndorf, and Mount Barker and its neighbourhood, are the localities most visited by the disease, and these are also the...

During our short session, and with the Christ mas vacation staring them ia the face, it would seem a9 if both ministers and members were d'accorde to make the most of their time. Al ready a bill to amend the Municipalities Act lias been introduced aud read a first tiuae. Its clauses are so numerous and so long that it would be impossible in the space of our journal to follow and review it throughout. It may, however, be mentioned that on its passing and becoming law, perh.tps with a few amendments and additions, the whole country will be com* pulled to take it up and adopt it. In self defence, every town worthy of the name, will either have to be incorporated, or be left in the lurch, so far as outlay for improvements in road3, streets and bridges, and the numerous others which all must necessarily require from time to time. One of the chief motives in form ing municipalities, is to give to towns what New South Wales has sought and obtained for . itself, viz., self-government. It ha...

[MR. ELWORTHY] [Newspaper Article] — The Tumut and Adelong Times — 20 November 1865

[MB. ELWOUTHX] Reports having, on Thursday last, disposed of 14 head of horses, principally colts and fillies. The yearlings realised from 20s. to 50s. ; 2 year-olds averaged £4 ; and 3 year-olds went as high as £7. Mares, some with foals, both for saddle and draught, sold at £3 6s., £4, £5, £6 as., £7 2*. 6d.,and £7 10s, Considering the present depressed state of the horse market and the prospective view of our district for green feed, the above prices may be deemed unusu ally good ; certainly the animals were above the or dinary class of stock usually offered for sale, the young ones being principally the progeny of the thoroughbred horse ' Louis Napoleon,' and the im ported horse 'Farmer.' Two splendid draught mares were unsold, the prices offered (£12 each) being inadequate to their value. He further reports having had one of* two applications during the week for horse feed. The desire to dispose of landed property is prevalent, but the vendor*, enter tain the idea that a mania ...
