NOTES AND COMMENTS. [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 4 July 1894

NOTES AND COMMENTS. ONE section of the community ?will ap parently have cause to look on the Electoral Act with gratitude. The prospective difficulty in the interpreta tion of section 115 of the Act is calcu lated to make glad the hearts of the legal _ fraternity, as apparently on the moaning of one word will turn the fate of many candidates. The section mentioned provides that if any candi date shall corruptly hire, either directly or indirectly, conveyances to take voters either to or from the poll he will be guilty of treating the penalty for which is disqualifica tion-while the person who accopts the " treat" will not be permitted to vote and will also be liable to tine anil imprisonment. If a candidate can prove that his action is not " corrupt," all VLii bo well, and he will be at liberty to provide free rides ad lilt.; ' but already differences of opinion have arisen, and from present prospects few candidates will risk their seats that voters may ride. A leading legal authori...

GLASS. [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 7 July 1894

G LA4S, The Egyptians are said to have been "taught the art of making plaas liv Herine®. The discovery of glass took placc in >yria, and we know, from the ruins of Pompeii, that windows were formed *>f glass before tho year 7U. The manufacture of glass bottles is of a ttiuch more recent date. Some idea of the amount of glass used in bottle# may be gathered from the fact that over u million bottles of Wolfe's Schnapps arc «old every year in Australasia. Whilst this ^rives some slight idea of the extent to which glass bottles are used, it also emphatically testi fies to the enormous popularity and sterling merits of tkU incomparable stimulant.

WARREN. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] JULY 4. [Newspaper Article] — The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate — 7 July 1894

WJRTtEH. [FbOX 01TB OWN COBBEKPOSDEST.] Julv 4. TITERF. is really nothing doing hero now; everything is at a standstill. Business men are complaining, and say that business has never been so bad as it is at present. But though things are veiy bad, we are looking forward to something better in the near future. Last night a very stormy meeting was held by those desirous of having the town of Warren incorporated, to i decide upon the area of the proposed municipality. It was finally decided that the municipality should comprise an area of about 15 square miles, taking in most of-tho special areas. This has set the special area men up in arms, as they think they have enough drags on them now without paying rates to benefit the towns people only. The meeting was adjourned till the 17th July, and I expect to see the special area mon roll up and squash til a resolutions of last night's meeting, which I think they have power to do. The country round is looking splendid.
