Camping Reserve for Travellers. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 17 November 1880

Camping Eeserve for Travellers THE adjourned meeting mentioned in our lost issue as announced to take place after receiving information from the Lands Olllcc, was held at ilic Public Qoll on Thursday evening. There was a very large attendance of the public, About 70 persons being pre sent, including nearly all the business people in town, lite Worship the Mayor occupied the chair. The CHAIRMAN stated that with others he bad waited upon the Commissioner of Lands last Wednesday, had examined the plans, and been shown where water was reserved on Uie river and at Borcc Creek. Tliey were now satisfied that sufficient water was avail able for travellers and carriers, but were of opinion that the reserves were not large enough; carriers could water their teams, but there would be no grass upon which they could turn out their stock. The depu tation at the Lands office therefore came to the conclusion that it would be desirable to secure a commonage before the country wa? selected, and with ...

The Western Champion. Vita sine literis mors est. BLACKALL, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17,1880. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 17 November 1880

Vita tine litcrix mors est. ' BLACKALL, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 17,1880. THE following remarks upon tbe ques tions before the public meeting presided over by tbe MAYOR, last Monday week, were in type ready lor last issue; we print them tbis week, with such addi tions as have been rendered necessary by the result of the adjourned meeting held in the Public Hall on Thursday : Elsewhere we have given a brief account of tbe proceedings at a public meeting held on Monday last to suggest and adopt some measures for securing more camping reserves at tbe permanent waterholes in tbe vicinity of tbe town. An idea seems to have possessed certain members of tbe community that they could by applying to the Government have all the waterholes cut out of the pastoral lessees' pre-emptive rights, and reserved for the use of the town. Such an idea is, of course, absurd on the face of it; the portions of land pre-empted by the pastoral lessees are as much their own property as any freehold allotment is to...

BRISBANE AFFAIRS. FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT, November 4. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 17 November 1880

BRISBANE! AFFAIRS. ?BOX OUR BFEOIAL OOBEEBPONDENT, November 4. Thb Steel Bail Committee have, as yon sec, eons to a report, and that report Las been duly tabled. The report itself you oan see yourself, but I believe it took on awful lot of signing. They began early on Saturday last and kept it up irith necessity intervals for refreshment till dewy eve. I do not believe, however, the rumor that the members of committee ail took short sticks with them in ease of the worst. It resulted in a drawn battle. On every suggested amendment the Government supporters voted one way, and the Opposition the other, and the former being in the majority had it as they pleased. But the Opposition were squared by having their supplementary report, which is longer than the original one, and the opportunity of giving in full the verdict they arrived at. Both agree, however, in the obvious incom pleteness of their inquiry, and the desirability offsetting at the whole of the half told talc. There are some ...

LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 17 November 1880

LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS. PBINCE OP WALES BIBTHDAY.-The drought, the prematurely bot weather, anil other circumstances combined, prevented people from enjoying the lioliiay with the same rest as they did last year, when there were picnics at the dam nnd racing at the course, and all sorts of jollity in the evening. This season there was nothing on, if wc may except a cricket match played between the east and west enders of the town. STOP THE TBAIK ; THEBE'B TWO OF Us. -Bather a good story is current about two Barcoomcn who were on a visit to Melbourne lately. The trains on the suburban lines start punctually to the second, and leave the station every SO minutes. Our friends were going to Sandridgc, and arrived at the station just as the train moved from the platform. One gentleman who bears the reputation of being rather impulsive, darted off the plat form and with the speed of an emu dashed along the track in pursuit of Uic train, shout ing to the guard, "Hi! stop) there's two of us ...

The evidenoe at a magisterial inquijy, however, distinctly goes to prove that deceased was well treated at CorcenB, indeed like a son of the proprie tors. He was in money difficulties, from which Mr. de Satge offered to release him, and indeed pressed upon his acceptance sufficient to pay off his debts and procure a passage home for him. Rambling Notes. [Newspaper Article] — The Western Champion — 17 November 1880

Rambling Notes. BY SIMPLE SIMON. Considerable excitement was observable in llie city, whore peculiar cognomen is eo significant of evil doing, on tbc evening of the SUi instant. On inquiry I ascertained that a meeting bad been convened by His Worship the Mayor on tbc application of \ several "f the leading townspeople, for the 1 purpose of bringing under the notice of tiie i Government their impertinence in granting load in the vicinity of the towrisliip for tbc purpose of free-selection against the expressed wish of the inhabitants to the contrary.1 Sauntering down to the barn-like structure | that rejoices in the title of a Public Hall, I fouud His Worship the Mayor presiding. After explaining the object of the meeting in brief and lucid terms, he culled upon those parties who had 6igned the requisition to ' convene the meeting, to explain their views. Whereupon a cheerful-looking loud-voiccd radical addressed the meeting with reference to the enormity of the crime with which he c...
