REAL ESTATE SALE OF LAND ? Dispute Over Contract An interesting case was decided - by Mr. Justice Long Innes last week, in which H. E. W. Pope and others proceeded against Harry Price Ltd.. and asked for the rescission of a contract in regard to the sale* of land and 'the return of moneys paid by -the glaintrffs. .The building industry at the moment is suffering from the effects of financial strin gency and impositions such as the property .tax will only prolong its recovery, and even in some cases prevent 'it altogether. How far reaching the effect of this will be, can be real ised if one only 'takes pains to think what an extensive field building covers, far more ex tensive and beneficial to the greatest number vprobably than any other industry. Architects and their draftsmen, master builders and their 'tradesmen and labourers, suppliers of mate rials and their employees will ' be all affected by the tax.

REDUCTION OF COSTS Its Effect on Building [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 3 December 1930

REDUCTION OF COSTS Its Effect on Building , Archbishop Kelly recently gave some ?sound advice when criticising the system whereby men were able to go on in definitely receiving a Government ' dole: His words should have a special appeal tO all en gaged in the building industry. ? 'The Archbishop said: 'We find to-day that buildings which should cost a certain sum to consrruct ^actually cost: twice as much, so that we contract ' a heavy debt and have to go on . under a burden of interest. Such a condition as this stops industry. Hours of work should be such as will earn the wages which are paid.' - , In other words Archbishop Kelly said that hours of work should be such that if high wages are to be paid, they will enable1 build ings to be erected at a cost that would make theni- an economic proposition instead of a liability, which holds up industry. Instead of this we find that Australian workmen to-day are seeking short hours, and high wages, in stead ' of being prepared -to accept...

TARIFF ON PLASTER SHEETS Evidence Before Tariff Board [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 3 December 1930

TARIFF ON PLASTER SHEETS Evidence Before Tariff Board : Evidence was heard yesterday in support of aii application, by the Chamber of Manufac tures for an increased duty on wall and ceiling parts ancl decorations. Mr. Keigan, a Director of Wunderlich Ltd;, v in (his evidence tsaid that during the past seven years wall and ceiling boards had beeii im ported to such an extent that they had become ^ a. serious menace to the . industry, of Australia, ' particularly the fibrous -and cement sheet in-l dustry. During those seven years' overseas ? competitors had done business to the extent of ,£152.271 in Australia and 78 per cent, of this business had, been done during the past three years. W unde'rlich's asbestos and cement works at Sunshine, Victoria, had been obliged to suspend operations, whilst the plant at Cab- ; arita, N.S.W.,- was working only three or four' days a .week. Mr. S. NEWCASTLE CONSTRUCTION The Official Organ of the Newcastle Branch of the Master Builders' Association of New South Wales. Newcastle Master Builders WAGES TAX Funds for Building? [Newspaper Article] — Construction and Real Estate Journal — 3 December 1930

[?] The Official Organ of the Newcastle Branch of the Master Builders' Association of New South Wales. ^ Newcastle Master Builders * WAGES TAX Funds for Building? . y According to report, the money to be re ceived from the 1/- in the £ levy oil wages and salaries- .will '?not -be. earmarked by way of a special fund for the relief of unemployment, but will go into the general revenue of the Treasury to be used^as the' Government thinks fit. Under this scheme, a portion of it may even possibly be used to make up any differ ence between revenue and expenditure. This means a radical alteration, but it will certainly ?enable the Government to carry on public works that otherwise could not have been considered. ; Newcastle is certainly interested in the al teration. A big sinn will .be. withdrawn weekly -from, the district; though it is a mistake to argue- that money collected should always be ; spent in the area in which it is subscribed, it is only, fair to expect the Government to ? gi...
