PUBLlIC MnETINO. On Thursday evening a public moet. ing was held at the Council Chambers, having been called at the' request of the ratepayers to hear the viows of the several candidates for municifpil honors and was well attended. The' President of the shire (0. Whiting, Eqq..) oc cupied the chair, and in opening the meeting said that as usual on Alexan die he hoped each candidate would be allowed a lair 'hearing, and called upon Mr C. Cookson, who said that ha was a candidate, and he was not going to make the ra'epayers a lot of promises that the shire should soon be a garden of Eden, which promises he might not be able to perform should they do him the honor of electing him, but this he would say, he would po in to do equal justice to all honestly, and withoit fear or favor, and as there were severil th:ngs which wanted altering, he would do his utmost to remedy. any evil lie might find existed. MASONIC BALL. The Annual Masonio Ball of the Albert Edward Lodge, No 1291 took place on Friday, the 10th inst, at the State School house, Alexandra ; and proved a most enjoyable evening. Some twenty-two couples took part in the dancing, the music being supplied in a manner reflecting great credit on Messrs F. Moon and Bulmer, and dancing was most energetically kept up until fourteen dances (the first part of the programme) were got through ; the company then adjourned to the, upper room,:whero a sumptious basque was prepared for them by Iost Hames in his usual style, every luxury of the season, and ,n fact out of season, being placed in pro fusion on the festive board. After the good: things had been done ample justice to, the following toasts were proposed.
