Behrend Professor completes second fiction novel [Newspaper Article] — Collegian — 25 January 1990

Behrend Professor completes second fiction novel | Entertainment /. Madison Davis publishes "White Rook"a mystery novel about white supremacy by Lea Gotch Collegian StalT Writer When J. Madison Davis graduated from the University of Maryland, he went to work as a zoning inspector outside of Washington D.C This was a job in which he had to wear clip-on tics in order to avoid being strangled by unhappy zoning violators. This was definitely not the occupation that Davis was was cut out for. He is first and foremost a writer, and has recently published his second mystery novel, White Rook. It is hard to imagine such a soft-spoken, witty person deciding to write a novel about white supremacists, the subject of White Rook. Davis explained that the inspiration for the novel came from previously living in Virginia and Mississippi. Also, the subject of white supremacists and racial tension has been in the news frequently during the past few years, he said. I dont know if there is...

White Rook solidifies Davis 1 writing credentials [Newspaper Article] — Collegian — 25 January 1990

White Rook solidifies Davis1 writing credentials by Rob Farnham Collegian Staff Writer When J. Madison Davis chooses a set of villains, he certainly doesn't go about it by half measures. After all, his successful first novel, The Murder of Frau Schutz, was set in a Nazi concentration camp during World War II. No shortage of bad guys there. His new work, the recently published White Rook, takes place largely among a group every bit as cheerful and cuddly as the SS officers of his debut: An enclave of militant white supremacists. (Who should he go after next? Drug-dealing South African diplomats? No, that was in Lethal Weapon II.) Davis' protagonist is a Pittsburgh-based private detective named Delbert "Dub" Greenert. His usual line is gathering evidence for divorce cases, but when New Orleans' Devraix Agency needs an operative with "Pennsy papers," Greenert finds himself investigating the suspicious death of restauranteur Michael O'Dell. The most substantial lead Devraix can ...

Lion's troubles continue on the road as losing streak reaches four [Newspaper Article] — Collegian — 25 January 1990

Lion's troubles continue on the road as losing streak reaches four Men's Basketball Loss ofPringle, poor shooting hampers young team by Tony Viola Collegian Staff Writer Behrend's problems continued last week with two road losses and the quitting of star senior center Moise Pringle. Pringle said that he quit the team to concentrate on his academics. Pringle is the third player to leave the team, for various reasons, in the past month. For more information, please see related story on this page. Seventh year Head Coach Doug Zimmerman commented on the rest of his team's problems Monday before practice. "Other than wins and losses right now, one problem is the schedule", said the Lion's mentor. "We only have nine home games versus the twelve we had last year. Second, we're not as deep and we're not shooting the ball as well. We're also much younger this year compared to last." Behrend's record away from 'The Pit' is a woeful 2-9, while their overall record stands at a disappo...

Men's cagers will finish troubling season without their starting center [Newspaper Article] — Collegian — 25 January 1990

Men's cagers will finish troubling season without their starting center Sports 1 Lions lose third player in past month by Tony Viola Collegian Staff Writer The Behrend men's basketball squad suffered another major loss when star senior center Moise Pringle decided to quit the team after the Buffalo State game on January 22. Pringle said in an interview this past Sunday he quit playing so he could get his academics straightened out. Also, since Behrend is an NCAA Division III school and therefore is not allowed to give athletic scholarships, Pringle wasn't getting any financial aid to play basketball. This was another factor in Pringle's decision to auk the team. Previously, the team had also lost Junior guard Chris Viscuso and Freshman guard Omar Thrower. Viscuso was dropped from the team because of Behrend's academic policies, while , Thrower quit the team because of personal reasons. The Lions now have 10 players on their roster. Heading- into his last semester, Pringl...

Madison began playing basketball in die seventh grade. She was introduced to the sport by her brother and her friends. Madison attended Bradford Central Christian High, a small private school in Bradford, Pa. Madison says that playing at Bradford and for Behrend have been pretty similar, and that made the adjustment for playing at the college level a lot easier. Ironically, Michele said she wasn't the "star" for the Bradford team. She wasn't even sure she would play basketball beyond t...

After a tough loss to Buffalo State on January 22, the lady hoopstcrs went on the road in search of their seventh victory of the season. So far the road has been harsh, with losses to Grove City College (last Wednesday) and St John Fisher. "We had more talent than Grove City and definitely should have won that game." -Michele Madison Senior Forward Against St. John Fisher on Monday night, the lady cagers ran into the immovable object The hosting Lady Cardinals, the number one team in NCAA Division III, won their 19th consecutive game by a convincing 8S-S8 score.
