Want of a Larger Boom . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 11 March 1854

Want of a Larger Boom . A SPORTINO HALL . The difficulty of procuring a room of sufiiciently large dimensions to accommodate tha thousands of individuals who are fond of the sport of Sparring , is seriously felt in this city , and until some spirited citizen takes the initiative steps in the matter , we fear our pugilistic friends will have to confine their displays to the small and ill-contrived rooms now used for Sparring Exhibitions . We have no doubt that a room capable of seating comfortably one thousand or fifteen hundred persons would pay a good interest on the money invested—better , in fact , than some of the rooms now used for balls , & c . A Sporting Hall , devoted to the various sports , where the friends of the Turf , the Ring , Yachting , Pedestrianism , Cricket , ite ., & c , kc ., could meet and discuss the exciting topics of the day , would be quite a feature in this Great Metropolis ^ and could not fail of being a Go . tne iuiiuui Jemmy Trainer s Exhibition . nqtwunsianaing -. _ s _ a- _ of the weather on Thursday evening , 3 d inst ., Grand Street Hall was densely crowded at an early hour , on the occasion of the Sparring Exhibition benefit , given to Jemmy Trainer by his friends in this city . Mr . Trainer is well known as a celebrated delineator ofthe art , having fought several battles in the English Ring . He arrived in this city but a few weeks since , and by his conduct in sporting circles gained many friends , who , as a compliment , tendered him a benefit , which , we are pleased to say , was a benefit in every sense of the word . Owing to the crowded state ofthe room we were unable to take notesof each set-to , butthe principal attractions ofthe evening Were those between Young Harry Lazarus , son of Ixiy Lazarus , and young Mike Trainer , younger brother to Jemmy Trainer . As soon aa these young heroes appeared before the audience , there was not the least noise-every person present was...

Harry Lazarus and Mike Trainer . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 11 March 1854

Harry Lazarus and Mike Trainer . These lads have kindly stepped forward on every occasion when called I upon , and lent their assistance at the ] benefits given within the iast few months . They have given great satisfaction , and afforded much amusement to those before whom they appeared , and in return for these favors we hope a complimentary benefit will be given them by those who have been benefitted by them . Let a committee be appointed and go to work at once . We havo no doubt that a snug sum of money could be realized for the lads , who are really deaerving . The simple announcement of a set-to between young Lazarus and young Trainer , and another between . Mike Murphy and Jemmy Trainer , would fill the house . Wholl move in the matter 1 Benefit of Toting Kelly , of Brooklyn . i allow oincr uirus oi A Sketch ofthe Swallow . [Newspaper Article] — New York Clipper — 11 March 1854

i allow oincr uirus oi A Sketch ofthe Swallow . ne sw , ana passage—that is , birds who fly from one country to another , as the weather , becomes unsuited to their natures—now begin to return to us . The swallow is a general favorite . He comes to us when , nature is putting on her most smiling aspect , and he stays with us through the months of sunshine : and gladness . The swallow , says Sir H . Davy , is one of my favorite birds , and a rival of the nightingale ; for he glads my seeing as milch as the other does my sense of , healing . He is the joyous prophet of the year , the harbinger of the best season ¦; he lives a life of enjoyment amongst the loveliest forms of natjure ; winter is unknown to him , and hi leaves green meadows , of England in autumn , for the myrtle and orange grov-s of Italy , and for the plains of Africa .
